Bucket-o-Sand Technique
I've decided I don't need to be armed if I can carry a "bucket-o-sand"
I can "bury my head in a bucket of sand ...
That was Colin Goddard's survival technique, yeah he got shot, but got a lifetime of employment with the Brady Campaign
"Goddard dropped his cell phone when he saw Cho shoot his way into the room.
He kept his eyes on the ground, refusing to look at the gunman. "I saw his boots, I saw his pants, I saw his shirt, and I saw two holsters over each of his shoulders, pistol holsters, and then that's as much of him as I wanted to see. I didn't want to make eye contact," he says.
"I thought if I looked at him, then he would know I'm here." http://blackrod.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This is where the Campus leaders get the "Status Quo" solution ...
Problem solving method:"ignore it; it will go away"
Works for most problems right? credit card bills etc ....

Re: Bucket-o-Sand Technique
You know that is not good for the POLICE, you need to ID the shooter if he his not dead. PLEASE keep looking at the shooter enough to be able to ID him in line up. If you are shot and killed, so be it, next, please!

I just ran across that bury the head in the sand thing and it sounded like what faculty wants to do
I'm trying to find out more about Professor Wally Grant, who rarely talks
Like what if he'd have been armed (I know nothing about him nor the exact sequence of events yet ... if he was prior to x number of people being shot or one of the last etc.)
Professor Wally Grant was shot in the arm. He ran into a washroom to hide. (Unless that was revised/corrected later)

Wally Grant
John Wallace "Wally" Grant, 64, Blacksburg
Wally Grant, the head of Virginia Tech's School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences, was injured by ricocheting bullets while fleeing the gunman. He caught shrapnel in his upper right arm before he ducked into a restroom, where he warned a student to stay put.
Although he typically works between the spring and fall semesters, this summer he took some time off.
In a rare interview with his hometown paper, the Charleston (W.Va.) Daily Mail, he reflected on the events of April 16. The 27-year Tech employee said the bullet fragments can't be removed, but he experienced a quick recovery and has full use of his arm.

Wally Grant was shot in the arm. He ran into a washroom to hide. Student Zach Vane was just leaving. He told the story to 6 News Reporter Adam Longo in Knoxville, Tennessee.
"He had just left, in the middle of class, for the restroom."As I was leaving the bathroom, I heard a teacher say, 'I'm hit, I'm hit.' He came running into the bathroom and was holding his arm and so I didn't go into the hallway. He proceeded to call 911. I pushed myself up against the door because the door did not lock. He simply said he had been shot by a shooter on the 2nd floor of Norris Hall. He did not get a clean look at him. He heard shots, felt himself get hit and ducked into the nearest doorway," said Zach."

Yeah thanks
"The only decision that I was left with was to act as if I was already dead." ....
Because .........why ????
Why was that your only choice Goddard? huh?
Personally, I prefer more options.
There was one other thing in the sequence of events .. the one (unarmed) guy who jumped on Cho instead of hiding.
# Colin listened to the gunman continuing to fire and stopping occasionally to reload.
# The gunman left and reentered Colin’s room several times, shooting Colin each time he entered.
# Finally, after 10 minutes, the police were heard outside, and the gunman shot himself.

Re: Bucket-o-Sand Technique
True, and if they choose to be "fodder" I'm ok with that, but his agenda is to make all guns illegal, like in Mexico, so I'll be safe as I would be in Ciudad Juarez, and I'm not ok with that.juggernaut wrote:Some creatures are prey. It's the Circle of Life.RPB wrote:Yeah thanks

I'm all for it if a shooter only has 20 rounds and I sit behind the 21st person wanting to be prey, but it isn't that predictable.... he may decide to skip 2 pretty girls.

Re: Bucket-o-Sand Technique
I wonder if they Brady Campaign is hiring all the other students who suffered defensive wounds as well (hiding with hands covering their head). Oh, they can't, the rest are dead.RPB wrote:

I don't fear guns; I fear voters and politicians that fear guns.
Re: Bucket-o-Sand Technique
Note the ABC interview video on SCCC's Virginia Tech website (maybe facebook page, I forget) where many VT SCCC members interviewed in a group raised their hands when asked if they lost friends at that time.lkd wrote:I wonder if they Brady Campaign is hiring all the other students who suffered defensive wounds as well (hiding with hands covering their head). One person, Professor Wally Grant, who went to investigate unarmed, and got shot in the arm prior to running and hiding in a bathroom, hasn't spoken to take a stand either way that I've been able to find. Supposedly, the onetime he talked was to his home town newspaper, but I haven't found a copy. b His son was interviewed and said he recovered well and they had a family meeting, decided not to discuss the incident openly, or something like that.
I heard an unsubstantiated "rumor" that a professor did have a gun "illegally" ... and if that was whom, and he had left it in his office prior to going to investigate ... I can certainly understand not wanting to talk at all ... but there's no proof of that ... just someone, Woods or Goddard I THINK, said a Professor had a gun ... but it may have been another source .. I can't recall now.... maybe I dreamed it, but if I looked hard enough, I bet I could locate that again... wasn't easy to find the first time.

Not sure where this guy was that day ...
"Virginia Tech graduate student Bradford Wiles also has a permit to carry a gun, in Virginia. But on the day of the shootings, he would have been unarmed for the same reason:
