How many out of state permits?
How many of you who live in Texas have other states' permits/licenses? I have been a resident of Texas since 1990 and have had a Texas CHL since 1996. A few years ago, I decided to see how many out of state permits I could get. I got... Florida, Maine, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Connecticut. Sad to say I let Florida and Maine lapse. I'm going to get them back. A few I'm going to add...
Arizona - Just e-mailed for an application. They have un-permitted carry, but that's not the point. I'm collecting.
Nevada - Going to have to show up there in person to do this one and you have to list the guns you're authorized to carry.
Virginia - I can get this one in the mail, I've just been lazy.
Utah - Everyone else seems to be doing it, so why not?
Massachusetts (Class A -All Lawful Purposes) - This will be hard, requires an in person visit and interview and it only lasts a year. Is a may issue, but people have gotten them. State of my birth.
Anybody have some experience with others?

Re: How many out of state permits?
I chose to get a Florida non-resident "CWL" instead of the Texas CHL. It's cheaper, valid longer, and easier to renew. No problems whatsoever even after no less than half a dzoen interactions with Texas LEOs.
Carrying since 02/06/2009.
Re: How many out of state permits?
I presently have five CHLs (Texas) (Utah) (Connecticut) (New Hampshire) (Maine). The last three don't really get me into any place extra but that state itself. At one time I also had a Florida and Pennsylvania CHL, but they both became redundant as Texas and Utah reciprocity spread. There are others you can get, like Nevada, but you have to take instruction in Nevada. You can get Massachusetts by mail, but the cost is a total rip off for a non-resident. You can also get Rhode Island, but it only increases your range by that one state and I don't see the point in getting one for a state that I could drive across in less tim ethan it would take me to drive from Katy to Galveston - I could just go around the state. As things stand now, I am legal in 39 states, which includes the three you don't need any license for. I think there are few states that may soon offer CHLs and ultimatly non-resident CHLs, like Wisconsin, but I haven't really been keeping up with such things lately. I started off just needing a few extra states for travel, but then it became a little contest to see just how many states I could become legal in. It was easy get the ones for New Hampshire and Pennsylvania and I was told that in both of those states it is sometimes easier for an outsider to get a non-resident CHL than for a resident to get one - funny. What is amazing to me is how few officers know which other states Texas recognizes. You could probably show most any out of state license and get by unless you were acting like a fool or creating a disturbance. I would like satrrt pushing for reciprocity for any state that offers a CHL, but doesn't offer non-resident CHLs, like California, New York, Oregon, etc.

Re: How many out of state permits?
I currently have a Utah CFP (in addition to CHL), and I've considered collecting others, but it isn't that big a priority for me.

I have two carry licenses but no Texas license because of high cost and no real benefit.

I've been thinking of getting FL or UT, because we have folks in WA. Of course, I could just get a WA instead, but you have to apply in person.

Re: How many out of state permits?
First and foremost I have a Texas CHL. At the time I applied for a Texas CHL it was taking a long time to receive the “plastic” which prompted me to get a Utah CHP to carry me over if my Texas CHL expired before it was renewed. I think a Texas CHL should be a prerequisite for any others. It actually only took 59 days for me to receive the Texas CHL… not bad for the time.

And you can carry in other states on your Texas license. So, assuming you're a Texas resident, how so?Pacific Rim Job wrote:I can carry in Texas with either one of my out of state licenses. The Annoyed Man wrote:How so?Pacific Rim Job wrote:I have two carry licenses but no Texas license because of high cost and no real benefit.

Re: How many out of state permits?
. . . and a Texas CHL would provide you from an exemption to the federal gun-free school zone law in Texas (which privilege you do not currently enjoy). It also exempts you from the NICS check should you want to purchase a firearm from a dealer in Texas. The Annoyed Man wrote:And you can carry in other states on your Texas license. Re: How many out of state permits?
I already have the out of state licenses, so no reason to spend big bucks for no benefit. (for me but YMMV)The Annoyed Man wrote:And you can carry in other states on your Texas license.
