Texas City, San Leon: Armed robbers on the loose

#1

Post by seamusTX »

A man described as black robbed a store at 2903 Palmer Highway, Texas City, around 4:30 a.m. Friday. The clerk refused to give the robber money. A possible accomplice described as black and wearing black clothing was waiting in a white Dodge pickup truck.

Two men described as black robbed a store at 2100 FM 517, San Leon, around 5 a.m. Friday. One of the robbers fired a shot from a handgun. No one was injured.

Police "believe" the robberies are related.

“He walked up to the window, displayed a small, black handgun and tapped on the bulletproof glass with a gun, and said ‘give me your money’”, Goetschius said.

The clerk refused and called police, Goetschius said.
I guess the clerk had a lot of confidence in the glass being bulletproof.

Probably.

Refusing to comply with an armed criminal's demands is chancy. He might be so discombobulated by his script not working as he expected that he gives up (as seems to have happened here). Or he might get really violent.

Note that at the next robbery (if it was the same mope) he fired a shot without provocation.

Is there a reasonable likelihood the bullet will be deflected (at a minimum)?
Life is for learning.
IANAL, thank gosh!

For handgun and small-caliber carbine rounds, sure. Rifles and shotgun slugs, no. But even for the higher-powered weapons, bulletproof glass would give you time to duck, as opposed to standing there like a turkey.

Thanks for the links Jim. Very interesting.

No mention of ricochet with the pistol rounds. I wonder, like in the OP, what the chances of a ricochet returning and hitting the BG.

The owner of a store in the 2200 block of FM 517 in San Leon was loading cigarettes into a van at 7 p.m. Friday when "a man armed with a gun" demanded the victim's wallet and keys.

The van was found later a short distance away minus the cigarettes.

No one was hurt. No description of the robber is available.

This possibly is the same store that was robbed in the first story above.

With pistol rounds, splatter and jacket fragments would be a serious concern. Think about shooting steel at 10 yards, and imagine doing it from two feet.
