"Convenience store owner fatally shoots would-be armed robber

(7/04/05 - HOUSTON) â€” A convenience store owner turned the tables on a would-be armed robber, leading to some deadly consequences.

It happened at the Sunny's food store on Synott near High Star in southwest Houston just after 9pm Sunday. Police say the suspect walked into the store, jumped the counter, and demanded money while pointing a gun at the owner and another customer in the store. The owner was able to produce a gun to protect himself.

"The store owner fired two shots and the suspect was later found dead behind the store," said Officer Philip Yochum with the Houston Police Department.

Police say the owner has not been charged, and that the case will be turned over to the Harris County District Attorney's Office. "

Holy COW. I've been in that Sunny's many many times. 20 or so years ago I dated a girl that went to Elsik High School which is right down the street.
I can't believe that place is still open. It was sleezy back then, I can't imagine how bad it must be now.

Whatever happened to the good 'ole days when we used to only hear about the shootings outside the "ice houses" down Telephone Road on Friday and Saturday nights/mornings???

I was in Htown this weekend, dropping family off at hobby. My uncle is a subcontractor who's business does plumbing for incoming apts and he was telling me "back in the day" stories about cash jobs that the mob was doing to launder money on telephone road.

My Mother and Father used to go to this restaurant up on the Gulf Freeway south of the 610 loop called Dante's...

Thats where "they" used to do a lot of "dinners" and "meets and greets" away from the "business"...

I found this out from Dad, when I told him I took the wife there once for "dinner"...Because one of the "guys" there said to me, "You're So and So's son aren't you! Tell him Angelo sends his best will ya!"

I don't know if that was a good or bad thing...

I too have been to that Sunnys many times. I had an Aunt that lived in that area. Lets not even talk about those Telephone Road Icehouses. I saw one of the worst cut-em-up fights I have ever seen while drinking a beer with one of my buddies there. Bad bad!!

Between that and the hookers on the prowl.....a man coud get a buzz two different ways....LOL. No thank you....not for me!!!

Now talking about a Houston Boy......how many of you remember the Peppermint Park amusement park facility off old 59 south. The building was red & white stripped. I think the building is now owned by one of the car dealerships.

I remember Peppermint Park. It became Archer Chryslers body shop for a while. I have no idea who owns it now.

Not too far up the road from the Peppermint Park building was a restraunt, I forget the name, but there was a giant shrimp and a giant crab on the sign. Both had glowing eyes as I recall. They also had some of the best seafood I had ever eaten as a young boy.

Those were the days!!!!
