I think that clerk will just get on the ground and stay there if ever robbed again. I wonder how far away the deputy was when he shot at the clerk. If he was at close range, I would think that he used the old "Spray and Pray" approach when the adrenalin kicked in. If that is the case here, it likely saved the clerks life. I also get the sense of some divine intervention... The odds of not getting hit with 8 rounds fired at you have to be pretty significant.

IIRC, both officer Ginn and the mental guy (got a letter from the city to mow his yard, was mad at the city) emptied their guns at each other at about 6 to 8 feet from each other (opposites sides of a boat, if I recall correctly), no one got hit, while Jeff was behind a tree reloading, the other guy ran to the garage, got a carbine and ran back and killed Jeff. (Even with speedloaders, shakes cause delays)

Jeff had just been at my house earlier in the month, I was trying to get officers to switch from their service revolvers to higher capacity/bigger caliber Glocks, preferably in .40 S&W or .45 then. Most did after that. (Some of those only went to the range once or twice a year; but I started inviting them to their own range to try out new things I bought back then, so I could get at least a few to go more often)

If you can dig up a copy of the statistics from the NYPD SOP 9 (or is it 5?), you would see that missing is the norm for their officers. Their department hit rate runs around 20%. Some times less. I remember seeing comments to the effect that it is not much different on a nation-wide basis, but this is hard to pin down. NYPD at least has the guts to track their hits and misses, and publish it (at least to select audiences).

However, I don't believe it is the case that each officer that shoots hits one of every five rounds. It is that one officer gets one or more good hits, and the next four or five miss completely.

That guy, Diallo I think, who was shot by several NYPD officers when they allegedly mistook his wallet for a gun was fired upon close to 50 times (rounds), but hit "only" 19 -- which is about 20%i. I never saw a breakout that showed whether one or two officers got all the hits, or all four or five officers got some hits.
