Mystery barrel problem....
I got this in an email from my brother. Perhaps you guys can help me figure out what the problem is....
Sighting in your expensive new deer rifle
1. Shiny new, high-powered deer rifle............$1,200.00
2. Quality, high-powered scope.........................$550.00
3. Bore sighting device......................................$140.00
4. Forgetting to remove the bore sighting device prior to actually shooting the rifle?
Priceless
5. Hospital Visit..........................................$14,893.00

Any help y'all can give me in identifying the source of this problem would be appreciated.

Supposedly this post explains the photos of the gun and the reason are real per this post http://jeffersonian.therealgunguys.com/ ... tml#kaboom" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. The photo of the guy at the end is pure fiction as the blogger said the real guy was actually fine.

Yeah, I was going to point out that the damage to the barrel did not indicate the damage to the human.Keith B wrote:Supposedly this post explains the photos of the gun and the reason are real per this post http://jeffersonian.therealgunguys.com/ ... tml#kaboom" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I have the SiteLite bore sighter. I guess you are saying if mine gets stuck, don't shoot it out. It will not work again... Good information.

He can get a new case for that rifle at Walmart. It's over there by the umbrellas.

Re: Mystery barrel problem....
I'm looking at this again and while I don't have any other explanation for the damage, it just doesn't add up for me. Once the first half inch or so of the barrel splits from the pressure, wouldn't that pretty much release all of the rest of the pressure? I just can't see how the barrel would continue to split so far up.

Ah. He's just milking his five minutes of Internet fame. Clearly, all that gun needs is a quick recrowning and it should be shooting sub-MOA at 150 yards, no problem.

Mythbusters tried to banana peel a barrel and couldn't. They got partial results when they used a very old Damascus barrel.
This is a hoax. Has to be.

Re: Mystery barrel problem....
I know I'm not Mythbusters, but when I was in high school, a friend and I were out seeing what we could scare up in the field by his house. I was carrying his 12 gauge, stepped off a bank, and stuck the barrel in the mud. Tried to clean it out, and then shined a flashlight into the muzzle, and looked through the breach to see if it was clear. (Ok, it wasn't the best plan, but at least we were being cautious enough not to look straight down the barrel...) Anyway, we could see the light shining up the barrel. I still wasn't convinced and wanted to head back to the house and check it out. He, on the other hand, thought it was clear, and told me to shoot it to see (I know, really not a great plan, but we were in high school, remember!). Since it was his gun, I complied and fired. Didn't seem like anything bad happened, but he was shining the flashlight where I shot, (not on the gun), and after I shoot, I could see what looked like mud on the outside of the barrel. Slid my hand down the barrel to wipe it off, and sliced my hand open. The shot had peeled back 6 inches of one side of the barrel, just like a banana peel. Gave me a whole new respect for the dangers of any obstruction in the barrel. So, I'm going to call this one... plausible.

Re: Mystery barrel problem....
Having watched the Mythbusters' attempt to "scientifically" test theories, their inability to reproduce this doesn't mean anything to me. From what it looks like, the barrel split at the rifling, there is serious fouling where the bullet would have impacted the sight in the photo, and as linked above, the blog entry and photos appear to predate any of the earlier reports and e-mail forwards I've seen. EXIF data in the photos (yes, forge-able, but still would have to be someone who knows what they're doing) matches the post date and story. The guy runs (and still maintains) the blog and is very obviously a high-power match shooter and not some dude who makes things up and posts them on the internet.TLE2 wrote:Mythbusters tried to banana peel a barrel and couldn't. Did the ATF arrest him for "making" a SBR without paying the tax?
