Magazine requirements

#1

Post by TxGun »

I have seen that most matches are max of 10 rds per mag. Does that mean you may use, say with the Glock, a 17 magazine but only put 10 in the mag? Or do you have to buy the 10 rd mag?

Thanks for your help.

So long as the gun with the magazine in it fit in the IDPA box the total magazine capacity isn't an issue. You can down load high capacity magazine to your division capacity.

my first (and only so far) IDPA match at PSC in May or June. As I was new to IDPA (as if everyone did not know that LOL), I asked a lot of questions to the "squad leader" and also told him 3 times that my weapon "only held 12 rounds".
in the 3rd event, a sitting shooting at 6 targets, had to put 1 in each chest then 1 in each head. I ran though, 1 mag, and did not reload, he 'dinged me' for not following IDPA rules, and stated maximum 11 rounds per magazine, or if your magazine held less than 11, just load to magazine capacity.

Teamless,
To clarify the rules state only 10 rounds in a magazine. The 11th round is the "one in the pipe" if you are running high cap magazines you can put 11 in the first mag, and not have to top off. if you are using a 10 rounder or less you will have to top off to have one in the chamber and 10 in the magazine.

Loading more than 10 rounds in a magazine can lead to a penalty in IDPA. I use a "Barney Mag*" to load the chamber then replace it with a mag loaded to division capacity.

* A mag loaded with only one round. Named after "Barney Fife" on the "Andy Griffith Show" who only had one bullet for his gun.

To clarify even further on this topic...

On stages that require "gun loaded to division capacity", you MUST load up to that capacity if your gun/mags will hold it. For example if you were shooting a Glock 17 in ESP or SSP you would be required to start with mag loaded to 10 rounds and have one round in the chamber. I have failed to do this a few times and earned the penalty
