Had a good day at Elm Fork this afternoon

#1

Post by The Annoyed Man »

My son and I went to Elm Fork today and we shot carbines and pistols in the tactical bay for most of the afternoon. We brought along two friends of my sons, and the sister of one of those friends.

For the sister and the other guy, this was their first time shooting. We got them started on a .22 pistol, then 9mm, and finally .45. I had brought along my .44, but I accidentally left the ammo for it at home. My son's friend's sister was actually disappointed that she wasn't going to get the chance to shoot it today! But, she was philosophical about it because she said she would be going shooting again as soon as possible, and she was sure she'd get the chance to shoot it again some time.

Then we got them on the carbines, and they had a blast. Now the girl wants an AR of her own. She also preferred the .45s, both the M&P and various 1911s, to the 9mm Glock. It wasn't a pistol platform preference thing so much as a caliber preference. But she took to shooting like a duck to water.

The other novice shooter is a guy who works on the crew my son supervises. He preferred the pistols to the rifles. He shot the carbine well, but he didn't enjoy it as much because he thought it was too easy. He said he liked the challenge of trying to hold the pistol steady and shoot it well.

Anyway, it was a good day, and we got two new converts.

Does Elm Fork allow FMJ for carbines on the tactical range? I know that they require magnified optics and no FMJ on the 100-yd rifle range, but I can't find the answer on their web site, and my e-mail inquiry has not yet been answered. I'm still looking for a good FMJ solution....

Thanks for the info. I'm definitely going to check them out and am looking at some classes taught there by Tiger Valley.

Yes, FMJ is allowed in the Tactical Bay.

Annoyed - it's been awhile since I've been to Elm Fork, question for you - since they have a tactical bay, they have no objections to full-auto sub-guns, right? Maybe?

I have personally observed full auto M4s and MP5s being fired there, and I've fired a suppressed weapon there. I don't think they care as long as you're legally allowed to have the weapon in your possession. I don't know if they require you to produce the papers before they'll let you shoot a full auto weapon, but I don't think so, as I never saw an RO ask for proof of legality.

Annoyed - thank you for the info! :tiphat: I keep a front/back copy of my Form 4 in the range bag just in case I get questions. Need to go out there and let some lead fly...once it cools down, of course! :biggrinjester:

I'm a fan of this range, I just wish they charged a bit less and were a bit stricter on safety. The facility is great, just don't be surprised to see some "less than safe" behaviour.
