modified wally walk

#1

Post by hangfour »

I did my wally walk today having gotten my plastic in last night's mail. I took the liberty of modifying the 'standard' (if there really is a standard WW) to match my lifestyle. I took the whole morning to complete my wally walk while adding some 'spice' to the wally walk format.

I began with a bicycle ride at 7:30 am into downtown Austin to one of my favorite coffee spots where I met a couple of friends. My holster and gun (S&W 38 special) worked great with my bicycle. I spend a lot of time on my bicycle so I wanted to make sure I could comfortably CHL on my bicycle. By the way I probably have one of the few bicycles in Austin with a National Rifle Association sticker (no one notices).

After coffee I purposively rode by the Texas capitol building so that I could exercise my right to carry in our state capitol (yea for Texas). My friends stood outside and watched my bike (so that they could not see me go through the CHL entrance) while I went in to use the bathroom. I was greeted by three troopers who checked my plastic and drivers license and, as I have read in other posts, asked me if I were carrying. It was a nice feeling knowing that the CHL license carries a huge level of trust by state troopers.

After that I jumped in my truck and headed to the Barton Creek Mall where I purchased a new wallet for my CHL. I could not see putting that shiny license in a wallet that I have had since 1991. While at the mall I stopped by Nordstrom's to get my shoes shined. Of course the shoe shine guy did not notice that I was carrying. Then back in my truck to wal-mart.

I had trouble finding a wal-mart. I have only been in a wal-mart a couple of times. I believe that what I spend my money on is what I'm voting to exist in the world. I rarely vote for big box stores. In any case, I made it to wal-mart, purchased a box of 38 special ammo and went to the bathroom there. Uneventful.

In summary, It was really satisfying after all the waiting and checking the DPS web-site for updates to be finally carrying. The piece of advise that I found most helpful on this forum about carrying was (I wish I could remember who said it): load it, wear it, forget it. That's just what I did. Thanks to all!

"I had trouble finding a wal-mart. "

Folks in other parts of the state may find that hard to believe, but I know of only two here in Austin! Congratulations! :hurry:

Bonus points for going to the state capitol on your first day out.

I go on morning runs with my daily carry...you just need the right holster. You will soon forget you have it sometimes. I know it sounds weird, but once you carry everywhere, you feel downright weird not carrying.

I took the 7am flight to Dallas from Houston for a quick meeting, and the 2:30 flight back on the same day. I did not check anything since I just had a notepad folio. I felt practically naked WITHOUT my gun.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for the encouraging words ... I sure appreciate all the comments. As the day progressed I had a chance to carry my Beretta 9mm px4 compact storm also. I visited an auto supply store (my scooter needed a new fuel line), and two grocery stores. It feels nice to be carrying. Tomorrow I'm off to the range to do a little practice. Good night all.
