I just got off the phone with dps chl (heheheh #3 + 0 lol ) who pretty much cleared up all my photo questions.

Came up with a question after I got off the phone. Anyone know if on the affidavits where you put county at the top of each form, does it have to be the county that your application will say you are from.

I live in Austin and The Woodlands North of Houston and I travel between the two every 3-4 weeks. I am in Austin right now but I want my address in Montgomery county to be the primary address on everything related to my chl, think if i get them notarized in Travis there will be a problem.

The affidavits should list the county in which the document was signed, regardless of your county of residence.

Actually, I think it should list the county of residence of the Notary.

I took my class yesterday, and as part of it a PD sergeant did our fingerprints. The instructor said they've done about 4,000 applicants so far, and we were told the applicant and fingerprinter signed one photo only, the one that gets clipped to the paperwork; the one that gets taped into the photo holder was not to be signed.

Doing the double-check here I read that both photos need to be signed. So I triple-checked the pink "Read This Page First" sheet and the green "Instructions to Law Enforcement Agency Employee..." in the application packet. They both clearly say that one photo is to be signed.

I feel comfortable doing the certified mail thing tomorrow and sending mine on its way. I imagine it certainly couldn't hurt to have both photos mutually signed, but I wonder if that might deserve a little clarification on the Checklist?

I had both photos signed just in case. Only been 18 days though.

Yes, the instructions say that one photo must be signed, but it doesn't say which one... so, I just tell everyone to sign both of them. And I have the fingerprinter sign both of them.

Actually, I think it should list the county of residence of the Notary.

Charles is correct. It is the county where the documents are signed. The notary stamp no longer has the county of residence on it. Texas notaries are valid across the state.

That's true, the stamp does not have a county on it and it is valid anywhere in TX, however, I am in Tarrant county and my notary record book is maintained in Tarrant county.

The instructions do still say to sign one photo, but we were asked to have both signed when we were in instructor renewal class last year.

Yep; I think having both photos signed by the applicant and fingerprinter makes perfect sense. Should we have an elaboration on The Checklist, though, so folks won't freak out if they find themselves with only one signed photo in hand after they finish a class-with-fingerprints-included?

OK, this may be an indication of me getting old and senile, but here's what happened to me:

I registered and paid for the CHL online. When I finally got the application materials about a month later, I could not figure out how the photo holder was supposed to work. Then I went to my CHL class the next day, and I found that the photo holder sent in my packet did not have any perforations on it; no place to separate the form and no place to punch out the opening for the photo. I thought that was strange; the instructor said he had seem a few like mine recently and gave me a good one. I didn't think much about the possibility of any other glitches in my materials after that.

Before I mailed my completed application to DPS, I was very careful, anal even, about getting all my forms completed and correct before I mailed them, double- and triple-checking both sides of everything for complete info and signatures. I made a copy of everything before I mailed the packet, which involved flipping over each page of the 2-sided application form itself to place each side on the copier.

About 30 days after DPS received my packet, the status went from 'Packet mailed to applicant' to 'Application incomplete - missing information - detailed letter has been sent'. I couldn't believe it. I sent them an email asking what the problem was, to which they replied "You didn't sign the web form". I thought "What the heck is the web form?" and went home to look at my copies of everything, but still didn't see any missing signatures on anything.

A few days later when I got the letter from DPS requesting the missing info, I realized that there is a fourth page to the 2-sided application, with a signature line, which I did NOT have in my copies.

Like I said, maybe I overlooked it due to a senior moment, but I am convinced that the application they sent me was BLANK on the other side of Page 3. Now I have to start the wait all over again. Grrrrrrrr!

Make sure you have 4 pages to the online application form, which is different from the form an instructor will give you in class, because the last page requires your signature!
