Sure...do that. Then, when the BG's see you leave your house, they know that there is a high likelihood of weapons being in the house. All these signs and stickers are just adverts for the contents of your home.

As for the CHL badge, well...my thoughts are that the folks who buy CHL badges are mall commandos, tacticool dorks, etc. Wannabe cops, basically.

(not a personal attack...I haven't read the thread to see who and who not is in favor of a CHL badge...these are just my personal opinions / observations)

Sure my guns are more valuable than anything else in my home, and I'm sure that guns are the easiest thing to get a quick and a fairly large amount of drug cash. Still, it's a heck of a risk for criminals to go into a household that they know is oriented to shooting intruders, and I just don't think that most criminals are bold/stupid enough chance it. Maybe if the sign indicated that the occupants carry their weapons it might help get the message across. I'm largely basing that opinion on crime statistics of environs that allow CC/gun ownership and those that don't. I hear that burglary is up 100s of percentage points in the UK and break ins with occupants present are going through the roof too.

Now you piqued a curiosity in me about how gun heists are coordinated and from where the majority are taken. Anyone know a site that answers that?

I think you might be advertising you own guns and get robbed when you are out of the house. I won't even put an NRA sticker on my truck for this reason. I would prefer the bad guys not know I have anything worth stealing.

Edit: I see someone already mentioned this. I could have just done this...

It has been proven that crime goes down in areas where criminals are aware that citizens may be armed, and crime goes up in areas where criminals are confident that the citizens are not armed; so it would stand to reason that criminals don't like to bother people with guns.

Now even a well planned effort to take guns from an individual whose policy is to shoot intruders would be a risky endeavor, even if the bad guy is reasonably sure of the domicile's occupancy status. I wonder if police officers are the target of burglars for that same reason. Maybe they are, I don't know. Street guns don't come from Academy or Cabela's (contrary to popular liberal sentiment), and I would like to know from where the lion's share come.

In my world, advertising you have something worth stealing makes you more likely to be burglarized. Most stolen guns come from the homes of folks who tell the wrong people they have them. The rest come from random luck. Why on earth would a burglar be worried about a house full of guns with nobody there to shoot them? Darned near every home in Texas has at least one gun. But the home with the NRA sticker is the one with the serious gun owner and the one much more likely to have a nice fat collection.

Oh well... you go ahead and throw that flag up in your yard and I will quietly keep my ownership to myself.

The stats taken, which I haven't looked up so I'm taking your word for it, of more guns in society=less crimes overall are from a macro level. That does not necessarily mean that more guns known to be on a particular property or person (micro level) the less likely they are to have crimes perpetrated against them. Someone started a thread here the other day about all of his reloading supplies and bullets being stolen. They aren't scared of guns they know about. If they know where a gun is, they can control it easier. They're scared of guns they'll be surprised by.

Just what I was going to say. It is the uncertainty factor that is a deterrant. When you know your enemy, you are less likely to fear him.

A sign simply means, "Caution, there is good stuff here. You might have to work a little harder to get it, but it is here".

Okay here is where the miscommunication lies. I guess I didn't make myself clear. I indicated that the sign states, "I will shoot intruders," which I thought implied that the "good stuff" stays with me at all times in order for me to make good on that warning, whether I'm home, or might come home with my weapon. I didn't say, "Intruders will be shot if I'm home because I leave my guns there when I'm not home." That is why I asked if LEO houses got burglarized disproportionately because bad guys know know they have/carry guns.

I'm guessing that there is a distinction in a criminal's mind between "this guy has guns" and "this guys has guns, carries guns, and knows how to use guns".

LEO's don't put signs in front of their houses saying 'A LEO lives here'. Posting something like that shows you have guns, but like the ADT sign in your yard says you have a burglar alarm. Best to leave the bravado and machismo out of your statements and postings about what you will do.

Also, I can see a potential issue if you ever have to shoot an intruder, and the shoot is questionable, there may be some question as to your eagerness to shoot someone who comes on your property.

I look at it this way:

- the Burglar has no idea what is in your house, but has decided to target it. The burglar makes sure you are not home and simply breaks in and takes stuff.
- the Burglar has a good idea that your house probably has at least one weapon and decides that that equals good drug money at the very least. Since there is a cool sign implying that the owner is ready, able and willing to terminate with extreme prejudice any intruders the burglar decides that a simple armed Home Invasion would be warranted whether or not anyone is home.

I personally would not want to provide a BG with intell.

I can certainly see both sides of this debate, and I'm not sure if I would ever want to out myself-I'm just gathering opinions and experience. I indicated, hypothetically how a sign could be phrased to deter threats, but I think it's best to leave out insulting words to describe an individual (or his words) publicly like "machismo" and "bravado".

Those comments were not aimed at you, but at the way a sign like that posted anywhere by anyone may be interpreted. It is like someone bragging 'anyone that comes on my property will be shot' and then you have to shoot someone justifiably. It just wont' look good in the investigation and will bring up questions.

The word "postings" was used, which I took as postings to this forum from me. I guess I misunderstood-Sorry. I have seen way too many unnecessary words used to describe members and their postings recently, and to me the words "machismo" and "bravado" are the best way to describe the biggest jerk in the gun store on either side of the counter.

There are a lot of those out there. Luckily we don't have any major offenders on the forum. Most that join end up getting banned or leave on their own because members challenge their inappropriate methods.

I learned a long time ago to not let your mouth overload your butt when it comes to a defensive shooting. I have seen too many cases of someone who eventually was found justified, get really bloody in the investigation because of their macho attitude or bravado prior to or after the shoot. Take the Joe Horn case for instance. While he was eventually found justified, he received a ton of bad press and skepticism because of the statements he was making to the 911 dispatcher prior to the shoot. Had he been less vocal and less bold he would have not had near the negative attention on him while the investigation was in progress.
