today at cabelas

Quick and funny story. I was buying a new gun and the guy next to me was also buying. He showed his CHL and just before he was done with the paper work, they guy said, we can't use that, it's expired. Then he had the audacity to say, I left my current one at home..

Poser? you be the judge.

Idiot, is my judgement. When I get a new CHL or driver's license, it replaces the old one in my wallet within minutes of my opening the envelope.

I mean, why wouldn't you start carrying the new one right away? I can think of a few scenarios, but they involve shady conduct that would land a person in hot water anyway . . .
Original CHL: 2000: 56 day turnaround
1st renewal, 2004: 34 days
2nd renewal, 2008: 81 days
3rd renewal, 2013: 12 days

Sounds like he was too lazy to get it renewed or did not know about it, so he fed the employee there a bull line so he would not have to do the paperwork.

I hope he isn't actively carrying a weapon.

Actually they have to record the date on the 4473, so they can't ignore it.

Sounds like he was trying to "pull a fast one."

Anybody that "forgot" their new one...IMO doesn't have a new one. He either didn't renew or worse.

It is possible he screwed up. Not knowing the guy, it is hard to know. I have done this with new credit cards and tried to use the expired one. It is easier than one may realize to stick the wrong "whatever" in the wallet or get distracted while opening the mail and leaving the new "whatever" laying on the counter. I only say this because I have done it...LOL. It didn't help him in any case... I imagine they then made him wait while they made "the call".

Truthfully... a CHL is no big deal to some of us. I imagine the longer you have one the less of a "big deal" it is to you.

I would totally do that! I really try, but it isn't my strength. My husband is awesome about stuff like that. The new one would be in his wallet immediately. I would set the mail down without time to look at it because I have to bring in more stuff and get dinner started and answer the phone and direct chores... Then I'd be opening the mail when MOOOOOM would go bellowing through the house and i'd leave it to see why. Then I'd get back to it and see what's there when dinner started to boil over so I'd set it up high to separate it and come back to it. But out of sight out of mind and I'd forget. Then I'd go to the store and not realize I'd forgotten until pulling it out, at which point I'd want to kick myself in the butt.

It's embarrasing, but hard to overcome in all the little things of life. I hope to be there one day without needing to compromise on my care and focus for others. We'll see. But if you see me in one of the bad days where everything goes wrong, a warm smile letting me know that you understand it is one of those days would sure be balm to my soul.
