I would like to reiterate what others have said. Do the L1 electronic fingerprinting and save yourself some hassle.

I thought I wouldn't carry all the time too. Anywhere it's legal I carry. Wife has even adjusted to it being in bed with us.

Recent changes in the online process by DPS allow you to "electronically sign" your affadavits. The Online process eliminates the notary work for the three affadavits.
Also, DPS has indicated the electronic transmission of fingerprints can only occur if the online application has been processed. No all L1 sites have the ability to print fingerprint cards.
This is part of my recent discussion with DPS:
The department no longer sends packets for application processed online. A checklist is provided at the end of the application process that will indicate what items are required; forms provided by DPS can be found on the DPS website . Affidavits are now part of the online application and will not need to be mailed in by the applicant. New applicants will have the option to make an appointment at the end of the online application to have their fingerprints taken electronically. If the applicant chooses not to utilize the electronic fingerprint process they will need to have their fingerprints printed on APPLICANT cards. Applicant submitting photos for their application will need to present their photos to the person fingerprinting them as is done today.
Photos and fingerprints are no longer required for renewal applications but will be processed if submitted.
Regarding the paper applications everything stays the same.
