Anyone into hot peppers?

Small world! I went to high school in Odem. At the time, Odem was still dry (egad!), so we had to drive to Sinton if we wanted any "adult beverages."

I'm very familiar with Odem. I actually lived on a ranch between Mathis, Odem and Sinton.

FWIW, there are some restaurant supply stores that carry stainless steel bars for this purpose as well as the removal of onion and garlic smells from your hands.

I have used these and they work surprisingly well.

I used to work in the restaurant industry as a cook and trainer. I too have burned my eyes from putting in contacts with residual pepper oils on them. I learned a neat trick on how to get rid of the pepper oils from your hands. If you have access to anything made of stainless steel like a sink or faucet, while your are washing your hands, lather them up really good with soap and then rub your hands over the stainless steel. This reaction will eliminate most of the leftover pepper oils. FWIW, there are some restaurant supply stores that carry stainless steel bars for this purpose as well as the removal of onion and garlic smells from your hands.

That is a great tip. I will try that next time.

I have been growing ghost peppers (bhut jolokia) for about 18 months and finally have some ripe peppers to try out. Lets just say all my pores are wide open....

No. From what I have read about them I think it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that I ever will. And I do like spicy stuff. I fed my chili to a Yankee once. He took ONE bite and SCREAMED!!!! That was not one of my hotter batches. It was kind of middling. My second wife used to complain that it burnt her nose to just smell me making it.

I covered that area back in 74. Lived in Sinton, worked East of Refugio and West of Robstown. Was building NG pipeline compressor stations.

In 1972, I worked with a very cheerful engineer named Larry Johnson.
Larry loved jalapeñas and he kept a one gallon jar of jalapeñas and
onions and carrots on his kitchen counter. So one day after work, we
were going to have chili con carne at his apartment. Of course he
offered me a jalapeña, but I declined saying, "I will just try one
of the carrots". Because Larry joked so frequently, I was not sure if
he was serious when he said, "I would stay away from the carrots".

I should have stayed away from the carrots!...
