Yesterday's What The Heck Moment...
I had to run over to the nearest CVS yesterday and DID NOT take my pistol nor my dog as I was going to be gone "for a minute". When I came out of the store, I got in the truck and locked the doors out of habit. No sooner did it click, a woman tried to open the passenger door (forcefully) then decided to come walk over to my side. I yelled at her to back off and she did but at that point a truck pulled in directly behind me and she made a bee line for it and away they went.
Lesson learned.
Never again.

Odd...did you notice if the truck she got into looked similar to yours? She may have just mistaken the vehicle. Anyways, it looks like I need to make locking my car doors right away a habit.

Re: Yesterday's What The Heck Moment...
That's no mistake she made, she wanted your car. The truck pulling up behind you and her taking off in said truck is a HUGE red flag! Pistol and fido aside I'm sure you had your phone, 911 should have been called and vehicle description and plate given if possible.
That being said I'm sure I probably would have still been in shock and disbelief as to what had just happned that I might not have been able to follow my own advice as I sat in my truck watching them drive away asking myself the same thing....."what the heck was that"?
Glad you're ok!

Good point but it wasn't mistaken identity. Had she not had meth head teeth and that overall crack head look, I would agree with you. If you can't judge a book by it's cover, why put covers on books?

Lesson learned, and good habit confirmed. I developed the habit of locking car doors several years ago, and this type of scenario is one of the reasons. Now, if my wife and son would follow suit ...MasterofFajitas wrote: When I came out of the store, I got in the truck and locked the doors out of habit.

One of the members here has a great quote in their signature. I think this is it, but it gets the sentiment across well: "Carry always or guess right!"
In this case you did not guess right but were lucky. I am very glad for that. But remember to Carry Always. Maybe I have become a fanatic, but it is creepy out there and I have to protect myself and my family. That is why I have at least a Ruger LCP on my at all times, unless prohibited to carry by law. I especially carry around the house all the time.

Re: Yesterday's What The Heck Moment...
Something similar happened to a friend of mine about a year ago, but she hadn't quite made it back to the car yet, good thing her boyfriend was a big, imposing looking football player.
This kind of incident makes pocket guns like the LCPs and LCRs out there look better and better since it is so easy to just toss it in your pocket with a pocket holster and go.
Glad my car doors lock upon startup.

As long as they don't also unlock automatically when you shut the engine off...bnc wrote:Glad my car doors lock upon startup.
That's my biggest beef with the company car we have to use when we're driving on office business. Newer vehicles can have that function turned off. Ours is just old enough that there's no safety switch (at least, not accessible to us) - engine on, doors lock. Engine off, doors unlock. ALL of them.

All guns have at least two safeties. One's digital, one's cognitive. In other words - keep the digit off the trigger until ready to fire, and THINK. Some guns also have mechanical safeties on top of those. But if the first two don't work, the mechanical ones aren't guaranteed. - me

This is also a good time to evaluate your state of awareness and color codes. Where was she that she came up to your vehicle as soon as you got inside?
Was she hiding? In the future, what can you do different?

Re: Yesterday's What The Heck Moment...
To answer honestly, I will tell you that I have no idea where she came from. I did not see her when I walked to the truck from the store...I looked 180 degrees out of habit when I hit the threshold of the store. I believe she saw an opportunity when I looked down to snap the seatbelt. That means that she was close; perhaps she was behind a nearby column further down in the parking area.dihappy wrote:threoh8 wrote:This is also a good time to evaluate your state of awareness and color codes. The only things I could do differently is to look up and around when applying the seatbelt and park away from positions of cover opportunity such as columns etc. In a perfect world, I would have preferred to have my American Bulldog in the front seat of the truck as well...I would have known someone was nearby sooner.
