Tapatalk support for mobile devices?
Charles,
Have you/would you consider installing the Tapatalk plugin for phpBB? It's a plugin that allows iPhone, Android, and Blackberry phones to use the Tapatalk native app for interacting with phpBB and other types of web forums. It eliminates the need for zooming and scrolling and makes reading and posting much easier from the phone.
The phpBB plugin is free and looks like it should be a fairly easy install. Their website is located here:
http://www.tapatalk.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The other two gun forums I follow already support it and it would be great if I could use it for TexasCHLForum too.
Thanks,
Brian

Re: Tapatalk support for mobile devices?
I didn't know there was a mobile application, but I'd be happy to install it if there are no problems reported. I'll check out the phpBB website.BrianSW99 wrote:Charles,

You're awesome, Charles. I sometimes access TexasCHLForum on my Blackberry and this would be very useful!Charles L. Cotton wrote:

According to their website, yes. There was a question about security on the phpBB website and I'm trying to find out more. The Annoyed Man wrote:Brian, does Tapatalk support the Android OS?BrianSW99 wrote:Charles,

Re: Tapatalk support for mobile devices?
I tested Tapatalk on a Vbulletin based forum site and found it to be interesting - but mostly in its business model.
The website owners become unpaid advertisers for tapatalk application. The free version is read only - the paid version is $2.99 through itunes or other store. Every time a supported device goes to your site you will be forcing a tapatalk advertisement to popup on their device.
As far as Im concerned Tapatalk is not that different than Google Adsense - they cant make any money with out publishers like me, YET Tapatalk refuses to compensate me for the money they make off my customers.. ( I wish I thought of it )
Edit - one other problem is that Tapatalk censors most all banners in the default versions - Which for most publishers, is how we pay for the server to maintain the website. The more I learn the more amazed I am at tapatalks business model. Revenue flows ONLY to them based on my work. Amazing
I ended up removing the app and simply offering a simpler web design for mobile devices that is less graphically intense and less scrolling.
I at one time had code that forced mobile devices to the mobile style but found that in surveys, Most iphone users and others with modern phones prefer the full experience, So i disabled the code and the users can select the style they want.

Re: Tapatalk support for mobile devices?
I can see it from both sides. On one hand you're helping the Tapatalk company sell their software, without any monetary compensation. On the other hand, by supporting Tapatalk on your forum, your users who either already have that application or try it will be more likely to frequent and post on the forum, thus increasing traffic. You're providing them a convenience. You also have exposure to more people by being listed in the Tapatalk forum database. It doesn't display banner ads, so I can see how that might be an issue for some sites, but I don't think that will be a problem for this forum. Also, it seems there must be a way if you wish to turn off the pop up when you view a Tapatalk enabled web forum on a mobile device. I know that the Glock Talk forum supports it, but I don't get that pop up when I visit it in Safari on my phone. I do see it on some other forums.
Having a mobile theme or skin can help with the formatting, but it still doesn't allow you to use some of the more advanced features like upload picture attachments, at least not on the iPhone.
Right now probably at least half of my browsing and posting on this forum is done on my iPhone. I don't have a problem paying the $2.99 for the full version of the software for my phone. They spent the time developing it, and I think it's well worth the price for the convenience it provides. I too wish I had thought of it first :)
Charles, thank you for taking the time to look into it.

Re: Tapatalk support for mobile devices?
Charles,
Have you had a chance to look into this to see if it could be installed here, or were there still some security concerns with it?

Re: Tapatalk support for mobile devices?
Brian, apparently you missed the thread about a virus hitting a number of gun boards including GlockTalk. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=35557&start=0&hilit=tapatalk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; It looks like it was part of Tapatalk. Obviously the security issued that was raised on the phpBB forum was well founded.BrianSW99 wrote:Charles,
