Disadvantage to having CHL

#1

Post by Embalmo »

Guys,

I carry almost all of the time, including in my home and I practice at the range as often as possible. I also dryfire practice to improve speed of drawing, acquiring, and firing with random targets around the house of varying sizes and distances. So-I feel reasonably confident that I've familiarized myself enough to defend my self with all of my carry weapons.

My problem is that I feel absolutely naked and defenseless when I'm unarmed and I didn't feel that way before I began carrying. Is that a common sentiment around here?

Yep, me too. I have had my CHL for 6 months and so far I've been carrying everywhere I can. Can't carry at work but that's about it. My wife hasn't really come around, acts like I'm paranoid but I understand the one time I don't have it is the time I'll need it. She is not anti at all, she's just one of those people that thinks nothing will ever happen to her or if it does it won't be this time.

The wife & I have our licence , so its extremely rare that we aren't carrying.
If we are not carrying we treat it as if we are.
1. be aware of you're surroundings.
2. stay out of less than favorable places.
even then I still feel partially dressed :txflag:

I have been body carrying since 9-11, but not in the house. When away from the house, I do feel defenseless if not carrying.

I'm in the same boat. I carry about half of the time (stupid 51 signs, and schools I work at). But I find myself checking to make sure my shirt hasn't ridden up all the time, even when I tuck in my shirt.

right or wrong I have carried since I was 18 and do feel less safe without it. Not a crutch necessarily but too much knowledge of the dangers in the world. I go around Alvin without it a lot but not outside the city limits (ie houston, pearland, galveston, etc.). I remember carrying into clubs and such when I was much younger and have long known what "concealed" really means. Lucky i was never caught exercising my rights but at least it is legal now.

My son's graduation is coming up soon in College Station.
Since this is a school event at a school, I will not be armed for the first time since getting my CHL.

I'm already feeling the symptoms of withdrawal just thinking about it.

So, to answer your question...YES, I believe it is a common sentiment among most of us. :txflag:

I haven't went a day without carrying since graduating college. But while in college, I sure felt naked.

I have only been carrying for the past couple of months and i feel the same way. However, to combat that feeling of being defenseless when i cannot carry, i have decided to take some sort of self defense class (krav maga, etc). I also carry a folding knife. Something is better than nothing.

I do the exact same things that you do and feel the exact same way when not carrying.

One thing that I do is I also practice with my knife. Getting it out and opening it. This way when I am unable to carry my gun I still have a weapon for defense that I am comfortable with.

I've had the feeling of nakedness while not carrying before, just had to remind myself that I've spent more than one night running around drunk 'til the wee hours of the morning and still managed to not get shot, stabbed, robbed, or run over (or arrested :cheers2: ).

As another member on this forum has stated before in a different topic, the majority of people tend to go through life in condition white, totally oblivious to everything going on around them and still manage to survive for the most part.

Is that a good enough reason for me to do the same? No, of course not. Though I don't think we need to live in fear the few times we aren't carrying.

Sometimes I feel that keeping up with shootings in the news makes me slightly more paranoid than necessary.
