Qualification Question

#1

Post by mbw »

I just decided to get my instructor certification and found out that I am too late to do it this year. Bummer!!

I have a question that the lady on the help line was not able to answer for me. This info is directly from the instructors section of the DPS web site-

"Qualified applicants require one or more of the following: certified TCLEOSE or NRA instructor, approved law enforcement college firearms related courses, and/or specialized military courses."

Those are listed as pre-requisites for the Abbreviated 28-hr course. The Standard 36-hr class has no such listing. So if I understand this in order to take the Standard class you do not need to be an NRA Instructor etc.

Is that correct?

Yes that is correct (at least I hope it is - will find out in July I guess). I have no previous gun instructor training an thus am taking the 36-hour class this summer.

Thanks AR.

I guess since I have missed the class this year, I will go ahead and get the NRA pistol instructor certification so next year I will be able to take the shorter class.

Having not looked into the instructor class before, I am amazed that it is only offered 2 times per year. Looks like they would break up the class into smaller portions and have several per year.

NRA has a basic instructor class that you must take before you can take the pistole instructor class
