So why not just get a 1911? It has a grip safety just like a 1911; and it has a grip angle just like a 1911; and it has a thumb safety so you can get carry cocked and locked with 1 in the pipe... ...just like a 1911!speepdaedeesi wrote:...and i also like the idea of the backstrap safety, it would make me feel a tad better about carrying +1...
...the main thing i have heard is that the xd has a 1911 grip angle that most prefer. i wont be able to get my hands on one for a few months, so i can do now is dream.. .and read the responses to this post.
thanks! and yeah it sucks here in afghanistan!

i dont trust 1911s. im not trying to open a can of worms here, but too many moving parts. The Annoyed Man wrote:So why not just get a 1911? thanks to everyone who has replied, ive gotten a handfull or two of info on the xd that i had no idea about before.
the aftermarket parts/mods is one thing i have in mind... kinda like mp3 players. you know if you go with a ipod, you can find a case anywhere online, and cheap.. where as if you go with anything else, good luck. i guess its not too big of a deal for me considering im only looking to add night sights..
and on the backstrap safety- the reason i like it is when rolling +1, i could have a lighter trigger pull and not have any doubts about it, or at least i would have less doubts about it then no external safety at all..
but i guess it will all come down to test fire. maybe some of you guys would be willing to make a meet of it- id like to go up to top gun in houston and test fire both... and the different backstraps, and come to a final conclusion on my own.
i guess its hard to get my mind from thinking glock>everything else
im having a hard time picturing myself from carrying anything else. but hopefully like others have said, the grip angle and pointability of the xd-m will make me fall in love and take one home that day.
time will tell.

Ha! I was thinking of the XD at the time of writing. I'm a bit cautious about replacing the wife. In my experience they malfunction more often.USA1 wrote:Woman?neilp wrote: I would still have it but my ex sold it when I was out of town.... I intend to get another to replace it at some point.

Re: glock vs xd-m
The XD grip safety can acutely diminish the accidental trigger contact discharge potential inherent in the Glock. If you're in a fight and can't get a firing grip on your XD, well, you must be grappling with an opponent, and that's what your J frame is for.

No offense taken. I just think that, in time, you'll probably get opportunities to handle a nice 1911, and actually learn how many safety features are built into cocked and locked carry, and lack of trust will become a thing of the past. I actually own both 1911s, a Glock, and an M&P, and the ones I feel safest with are the 1911s. Plus they conceal very well because they are so flat. But to each his own, I suppose.speepdaedeesi wrote:i dont trust 1911s. im not trying to open a can of worms here, but too many moving parts.

A 1911 has too many moving parts?
Keep in mind that the design of those parts has
been satisfying shooters for 99 years and counting.
So no matter how many moving parts are in a 1911,
Mr. Browning designed them for the ages.
If you want fewer moving parts in a weapon, may I
suggest a machete? :-)

but, not on grip safety,
I have had both but I am really sold on Glocks, I will also tell you that I do not want a grip safety, do you think you will always have a good grip? Yes, generally you will if you practice at an indoor range or in some static position just poking holes, but that's not reality. Maybe you were cqb and had to use you fist to punch your way out, knuckles are busted so hand strength is diminished If you have done FOF you will know hand and arms are always getting hit, so you go to week side but just don't have the same grip. Try grabbing someone for 60 sec in a struggle to prevent them from getting to their weapons, you will have lost hand strength thus may not have a great grip, what if you get slashed on the forearm with a blade, sorry no grip strength. Did I say I don't like grip safety's

Re: glock vs xd-m
I have owned an XDM-9, and XMD-40, and still own an XD-9. I own a Glock 34, GLock 22, Glock 19, and a Glcok 17Gen4.
I have shot the XDMs and Glocks competitively. After using the XDMs, I decided to sell them both. I don't consider them _bad_ guns, but I didnt care _at all_ for the grip. I'm not referring to sight alignment, I'm referring to how well the grip functions when your hand is hot and sweaty, or cold and gloved. The wide "power strips" (or whatever you call them) on the XDM sure look pretty, but aren't very functional. Having recently used a G17Gen4, I can tell you that the new grip texture is awesome. It's definitely my preference and I will be rotating into Gen4 models as money permits.
That being said, my wife refuses to use a Glock (which is why I still have the XD-9). Some people prefer the grip angle (or the backstrap safety, etc.). As with all pistols -- shoot what works for you

I don't fear guns; I fear voters and politicians that fear guns.

Re: glock vs xd-m
I have mixed feeling about the Gen 4,
1. Its new
2. Barrel assembly not interchangeable with older versions, uses dual recoil springs
3. Its new
I am off topic

Re: glock vs xd-m
I am not a XD basher had one and loved it but after training at many schools and many rounds I wanted to keep my fighting guns all glocks, I have parts, extra barrels, I can strip it in a couple of minutes fix it if need be and back we go, share parts between guns as well.
I also have a pre 80 1911 Norinco, I love the 1911's, I even have a 20 or 30 round mag. Make big hole, but its not a modern fighting gun, yes it was at one time.
I have a Kahr MK9, great little gun, but that is what it is, little, 7 rounds is not my idea of protection 17+1 is. I do carry when certain occasions arise and as BUG
In fact when I visit guns shows I have to resist and think about the purpose of the trip, otherwise I would bring home way to many pistol's
