I've never done that before, but I have realized I was carrying a spare mag that did not fit my carry gun.

Me, too. But one night I noticed that there was no round in the chamber. Normally, I keep one there. Been more careful about that.I never take the magazines out of my carry guns except to recharge them, or to show a gun to someone. Otherwise, they are kept loaded all the time.

Did you guys see the movie Taken? If so, do you remember the scene where Liam Neeson is at his old police friend's house, at the dinner table? The old police friend pulls out his gun to shoot Liam and Liam essentially says "my friend, you've spent too much time behind a desk that you don't even know what an unloaded gun feels like!"
Well, I remember that line every morning when I pick up my carry piece for the day...and I do my best to remember what a fully loaded gun feels like. Hope this helps.

That's why I have an extra mag on the hip and a third in the man bag

Not to hijack the post, but had the same thing happen when bear hunting in MN. Guide took me out and I had my 45 on the side with a muzzle loader. Got dark and started heading back falling the trail of survey flagging I saw coming in. Needless to say got "lost" and started circling, but was happy I had more then one shot if something were to happen. Dang it if the bears did not "start" to circle around me too. After a couple of phone calls back to the guide, I finally made it back to the meeting point and started to unload the pistol - whoops no clip -slight pucker factor realizing I only had one shot at them circling bears. Found the clip at the meeting spot and found out the guide took down the flagging on the way out. Lessons were learned by all after a hard laugh (and beverage)....
