What do you carry and why?

I have not received my CHL in the mail yet (it has only been 34 WORKING days - after all!). I have read posts listing some magnificent firearms that are being carried concealed. Some of the guns carry with them price tags that border on 4 figures.
My area of concern is if (God forbid) it becomes neccessaryfor you to fire your weapon to protect yourself the first thing that will happen is for the law enforcement authority to confiscate your gun as evidence until the investigation and judgment is complete (however long THAT takes).
If I had a Kimber, Sig, Kahr, H&K, or any number of great guns this would be a concern of mine. All manner of things might happen during the interim, much less the duration of having a valuable asset sit on a shelf in a police property room.
Granted, the issue of reliability must be satisfied. Having done this I would think that my $385 Bersa Ultra Compact 9mm would be a better choice to turn over to the cops than a $900 Kimber. I understand that there are many debatable points involved here from both sides of the table.

It's just a thought of mine and wondered how everyone reconciles it with themselves.

I carry a Kimber Custom CDP year around. I know that if I am unable to avoid using Deadly Force the police will take the weapon as evidence.

Using DF is the most extreme circumstance I can ever be in. If that happens, I will have the best quality weapon I can afford that I also shoot well. Having it in evidence for a while is acceptable to me for having that firearm to defend myself. I want the best that I handle and shoot the best. For me, thats the CDP.

Remember also that if you're killed in a confrontation, you will still loose your gun and you will NEVER get it back so you should absolutely be carrying the best weapon you can afford.

Carry Kimber compac CDP. Presently have Don Hume IWB but have a Hoffner's Ultimate Shirt Tucker ordered & should be here Wed. or Thurs. Carry 2 ten rd mags in a H's. minimal. Also OC. Carry the Kimber for quality. If I need it I want it reliable. Feels good & shoots good. Carry pepper hoping I never need the .45.

Either a Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special in a Sparks IQM (weekdays), Sparks #1 Heritage (IWB), Sparks VM-II (IWB), or Sparks Summer Special (IWB); or a Colt Commander in the same holsters as above, but in Commander lengths.

Under extremely rare circumstances, I may carry a Colt Officers ACP or Glock.

Kimber Pro Carry, Sig 228, Glock 19, depending on how I dressed and if I'm going to the cow pasture or the mall, most of the time it's the Kimber.

Either a M1991A1 Colt, with some mods; a Charles Daly 1911, heavily reworked for reliability and night use; an XD9; or a NAA Guardian in .32NAA.

As far as why, well because I have a CHL.

And I have a CHL so I can carry.

"Ususally" an H&K USP Compact in .40S&W.
Sometimes the H&K USP fullsize in .45.
Very rarely (as in dressed up) the HK P7M8.
Carried in Comp Tac, Blade Tech and Comp Tac, respectively.
All loaded with Winchester SXT's.
Always carry a spare mag.

For summer carry Glock 23 (40) in a C-Tac holster (IWB) with 2 extra mags.

Winter time Sig 229 (40) 2 extra mags in a C-Tac (IWB) or Galco Jackass rig Shoulder holster.

When I am training or instructing, Colt Commander 45 in a Askins avenger with 2 extra mags also wearing a Level II vest.

At Public ranges, I take no chances.


Wife carries a Sig 239 in 9mm, purse carry.

I alternate depending on weather and concealment options, between a Sig Pro 2340 and a Glock 23, both using a variety of holstering methods...

Since we know that we will respond in a stress situation as we have trained, I carry a 1911 in the 3 o'clock position all of the time. I am afraid that if I switched up between guns with different manual of arms, in a stress situation I would not have the ability to instinctively respond.

When I do VIP work and am going to be the driver, I carry in a shoulder holster so I can actuall access the weapon. But I then carry a Beretta model 84 .380 on my waist at 3 o'clock. It has a frame mounted safety that I sweep down as I come on target, just like the 1911.

For the WHAT part of your question see my signature. For the WHY part of it....I guess I just like the simplicity that Glock provides. Simplicity leads to reliability and reliability leads to a good self defense gun.

1911 style .45acp as primary CCW because nothing fits my hand like a 1911 and I love the simplicity of the design.

Taurus PT-145 as my BUG/Office Carry because I can conceal it in the front pocket of most trousers. It feels great in my hand and shoots great. Best of all it is in my favorite caliber.......45acp.

I debated a long time with myself if I should share in this topic. I'm afraid you would all laugh or not beleive me. Since I feel fairly anonymous, I'll chime in.

Most of the time outside of Houstons beltway I wear a butt pack with the following contents:
Wallet, ID, comb, keys,change, 3' tape measure, pen, bandaids, alcohol wipes, candy, Advil, Benadryl, spare RX pills,cell phone, Fox Labs OC (after dark a Surefire also) and;

A hard chromed Kel Tec P11 (If I think I might get soaking wet or have to leave it in the truck unattended)
Or
a Glock 33 if I'm going inside the beltway (no matter what) or know that I will have it on my person all the time.
Outside the beltway I have an assisted opening folding knife in the weakside pocket. Inside the beltway I add a Kel Tec P32 to the strongside pocket.

When I need to not wear a butt pack, I carry the G33 in a UCR (IWB) rig, the knife and if needed the P32 in a pocket.

For the "huggie places" it's a Smart Carry with the G33 and the P32 in one pocket the knife in the other.

When I know I won't have to stand or walk alot or be hugged, I'll treat myself and carry my favorite SIG P229/357 IWB. It makes me smile. (but it's heavy)

I don't dare get one of those vests with zillion pockets in it I'd have all of them full and probably be thinking about stuffing the Kel Tec Sub2000 down the back of it. You just never known when you might need something........

Carrying all those guns is great weight training for the legs and hips. My wife says it helps keep the old derrier tight. Two great reasons to carry all that weight.
