The OP story is pretty scary stuff. I've had a few strange folks come by my apartment over the last few years. It creeps me out because I live in a high-rise downtown Austin and they'd have to sneak through the "security" measures we have here. Solicitors aren't allowed but they get in.
Glad it didn't turn out bad for you tho.

Re: Stranger at the door
Two perps dressed like security guards/cops and did the same thing in my town, knocked at the victim's door 11:30 AM and when the resident opened it, they knocked him over the head with a pistol.
If you don't know who it is, DON'T OPEN THE DOOR. Unless you're 100% sure, have a gun in your hand. Too risky not to be prepared.

This is, after all, the same government that came up with the Social Security card.threoh8 wrote:At one time a relative worked for the Census Bureau. I could have made a much more convincing ID using MS Paint.
Then again, I guess those would be hard to fake particularly well without a real typewriter handy; I still have my original card, and even though it's been laminated, you can still make out the slight dimpling of the paper from the impacts.
Re: Stranger at the door
I NEVER open the door for ANYONE, NEVER.
I don't stand behind the door either. I do one of two things: 1) I either say nothing and let them leave or 2) if they are insisting type I just yell thorugh the wall that I don't want anything they are offering and that they should leave. If they start giving they the sales pitch I will repeat very energetically that they "Need leave NOW".
After that I don't say a thing. They will leave.
Again my basic unbending rule is: DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR FOR ANYONE
Works every time, never had "incidents"
