Re: CHL online?
Every other time online possibility for instructors only. At least for the foreseeable future. If you did get your first one in 96 however and are up for 3'rd renewal, you may be eligible to not have to take the class. (But most of us suggest you do anyway.)

Re: CHL online?
In HB2730 of last years legislature, called the DPS Sunset Bill, a lot of provision were included in this huge bill of hundreds of pages. Several positive things for CHL'ers were included like no penalty for not immediatly showing CHL to LEO's,and the 51% sign defense to prosecution. The law mandated that CHL instructors be permitted to renew every other 2-year renewal online with provision for them to be able to completed the process in each county in the state. One would presume that they will have a provision for another instructor to administer the shooting portion of the process for another insturctor's renewal. It was mandated that system be in efect as of March 1, 2010. I am not confidant at this time that that date will stand because I have contacted them about that very thing and no one there seems to be aware of the mandated date.
In that same bill, there was a provision 'authorizing' DPS to devise an online course for CHL's, but there is not mandate for it so it is optional and per Charles, it is not under active consideration at this time.
If you would like to refer to the bill it is on the DPS CHL website:

Reply to sjones post above:
I would not assume that DPS will automatically send you a renewal packet. They have worked very hard the last six to eight months reducing the backlog of CHL applications, and we thank them for that, but you may be giving them too much credit.
Save yourself some grief and just request one. It can be done via e-mail or phone.
Just saying......

If the 2nd admendment only applies to muskets and muzzle-loaders, then the 1st admentment must apply only to the spoken or printed word. Printing must be done on hand presses, news stories must be written in longhand, no keyboards or electric processes may be used.

Re: CHL online?
sjones - With an October expiration date, it's probably a little early to be expecting anything out of DPS. But here in about another 90 days, you should start looking for a letter from them (including a pin number) giving you some options. Unless you have moved and failed to notify them of it. That often gets some folks in the midst of a little more grief.

Re: CHL online?
Nope, nothings changed except that I've gotten a year older and probably not any wiser. sj
Re: CHL online?
if you fill out the application online, do you have to mail in anything other than these items? will I receive a "packet" from them to send all this in? Took the class today and apparently some things have changed recently.
Thanks in advance.
