Re: Eagle Peak and Garland Gun Range
Garland public shooting range told me it was because the high velocity FMJ rifle rounds tear up the dirt berms quicker than soft point and or hollow point ammo.

Have you been recently? there are no overhangs at the benches. I stand and shoot my rifles with no problem all the time...austinrealtor wrote:I don't like that no FMJ rifle ammo is allowed, nor that their overhangs are down too low to shoot an AR-15 with 30-round mag. Not the best place to take your AR or AK for good cheap fun. Pistol range is OK. Rifle range is really limited to hunting and target rifles - or ARs with 20-round mags or shorter.
If you find yourself in a fair firefight, your tactics suck.

Are you talking about Garland or Eagle Peak? My comment above was about Eagle Peak. Still go there a lot for pistols, but haven't been to rifle range in a while.SouthEndXGF wrote:Have you been recently? there are no overhangs at the benches. Re: Eagle Peak and Garland Gun Range
the tactical range at Elmfork allows FMJ - its only 35 yards and it has a roof

Sorry, I was referring to GPSR. Never been to Eagle Peak.austinrealtor wrote:Are you talking about Garland or Eagle Peak? My comment above was about Eagle Peak. For the other poster, I have never been told I can't stand and shoot at garland, nor is it posted in any of the range rules.

Re: Eagle Peak and Garland Gun Range
Best place to shoot an AR in your our neck of the woods is Ralph's range up in Tom Bean (look for the short bus with muddin' tires).Afff_667 wrote:Not to highjack the thread, but where in the world can I shoot FMJ from an AR15 in the Dallas/Plano/Frisco area? I have saved the funds for an AR but am now holding off on the purchase until I find some place I can shoot the less expensive FMJ? I typically shoot my handguns in Garland and am relatively happy with it.
Thanks...
I really enjoy shooting pistols @ Garland Public but if I want to shoot my semi auto rifles I take them to Ralphs where I can shoot them the way they are designed to be shot. Bench shooting an AR/AK is like driving a Corvette 30mph IMO.

Re: Eagle Peak and Garland Gun Range
The overhead baffles are a safety thing. At Austin Rifle Club we have them on all of our pistol bays and are looking a the same for the rigle ranges. Areas are building up around almost all ofthe ranges and if a single round leaves the range, it can mean a lot od expensive legal action and ultimately being shut down. I'm the Chief Range Safety Officer there, so no one understands that better than I do. We have a required orientation class for all prospective members and also a range qualification where a battery of Range Safety Offiers observe and evaluate gun handling and we still have issues. I can't imagine the liability factor for those public ranges that just sell a membership or a day pass and let anyone walk through the gate. You can't really appreciate the seriousness of it all until you realize that anything that happens is going to land at your front door. About a half mile beyond our high power range, there are houses a highway and a school. Think about that when you go to bed at night.
