Red's North in Austin/Pflugerville?
Hey guys,
How much is a membership at Red's Indoor on the north side of Austin, and what sort of experiences have you guys had there? If I remember right, it's like $400/yr, which seems stupid expensive to me. What's the service like?

Last time I was there it was $14 per hr! I've been there twice, including once for qualifying on CHL. I avoid it completely. Stand at the firing line and look down, to the side and behind you for all the stray bullet holes. I do not feel safe from other people's negligence there. It's a shame because it's indoors and 10 min away.
I have however heard Good things of the South location. But I have not been there.

That's surprising. The manager for Red's North was my CHL instructor and he was a tough range master when we were shooting (class was at Red's South). Not saying that it isn't as you describe, but I'm surprised. I've shot at Red's south on several occasions and haven't observed any problems. I try to shoot during the day when its not so crowded though.Estand wrote:Last time I was there it was $14 per hr! I've been there twice, including once for qualifying on CHL. I avoid it completely. BTW - I thought $14/hour was high until I stopped in Bass Pro (San Antonio) last week and they wanted $10 per HALF hour.
Re: Red's North in Austin/Pflugerville?
My understanding is $14/hr or $400/yr. This seems high to me since the range I am at now is only $250/yr. I understand indoor ranges are higher but wow.
The short and long of it is that I'm moving closer to Austin in a couple months and Red's Indoor is really convenient to my new home. Just wondering if it's worth that price, or if there's a better option around.

Their closest competition for the South location is in Lockhart. I signed up a couple of years ago for the family membership. I calculated that we needed to go twice a month to break even on the hourly rates - didn't make it. It was convenient and nice to be able to stop in for a quick half hour shoot whenever you wanted. We were always treated well and luckily never experienced idiots on the range.

The equipment needed for an indoor range (plus the cost of the building itself, and opperating lights, HVAC etc) is CONSIDERABLY more than an outdoor range, which is basically just some lumber, dirt, and constructions costs - much of which can be DIY if you know how and have/rent the right equipment.newTexan wrote:My understanding is $14/hr or $400/yr. The bullet traps, mechanical target pulley systems, and air filtration systems of an indoor range are very expensive.

they have a good selection of guns to rent, but I'm not dropping 14 dollar an hour, If I did that I would load all my Magazines up and shoot as fast as I could to "get my moneys worth"
Never been a big fan of indoor ranges. Inhaling all the lead/smoke/ect cant be good for you

So where do you shoot instead? I'd love to find someplace cheaper.marksiwel wrote:they have a good selection of guns to rent, but I'm not dropping 14 dollar an hour, If I did that I would load all my Magazines up and shoot as fast as I could to "get my moneys worth"

From Dripping Springs, only other place I know of is Lone Star in Lockhart, which isn't exactly convenient. Eagle Peak near Leander/Jonestown is OK, and there is Astro north of Liberty Hill, but both of those are an hour-plus drive from Dripping Springs. Is there not anything out west of Dripping Springs, on 290 toward Johnson City? Or maybe something south, Driftwood or further? If not, someone should seriously consider opening a place out that way.davidtx wrote:So where do you shoot instead? Thats my retirement plan right there.marksiwel wrote:I go to Eagle Peak, I like driving out in that area, its not far from where I live (Cedar Park) its 10 bucks, and if you have a weekday off its mostly empty expect for some old guys who are at the Rifle range ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL DAAAAAAAAAAAAAY.
If you're a study of signs, you'll note their rules changed from "no rapid fire, one second per round" to "rapid fire on approval of range officer" recently. I haven't heard "Who's the Cowboy!" yelled in quite some time.
Near 290 somwewhere there's also this which you might strongly consider

OH yeah! Always forget about ARC. Have never been there, but that wouldn't be a bad drive at all from Dripping Springs.frazzled wrote:Thats my retirement plan right there.marksiwel wrote:I go to Eagle Peak, I like driving out in that area, its not far from where I live (Cedar Park) its 10 bucks, and if you have a weekday off its mostly empty expect for some old guys who are at the Rifle range ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL DAAAAAAAAAAAAAY.

I shot skeet at ARC once - it's about an hour from my house. There used to be a range down Hamilton Pool Road from me. It was apparently owned by a "colorful" character and is no longer in business. I'm in San Antonio a couple of times a week - my best bet may be Bass Pro Shop. $10 per half hour, but $100/year. I don't know how hard it is to get range time though.austinrealtor wrote:OH yeah! Yes when I started shooting in Austin we went there. It was great in being dirt cheap, you could shoot as fast as you wanted, and they had metal targets for pistol which was righteously fun. We also had fun in trying guess how many new wounds the owner would have and affectionately nicknamed him "Captain Sterno."davidtx wrote:I shot skeet at ARC once - it's about an hour from my house. We quit after driving all the way out there one too many times and finding it closed for the Anglo Saxon Feast of Atonement

Not sure which route you take to San Antonio (I-35 or US 281), but if you go the I-35 route there a decent outdoor range in the general vicinity of the horse track. Shot there once with a buddy of mine. Nice covered shooting area. Don't remember anyone being too overbearing as far as range rules, but also wasn't a lawless type place where you'd be afraid the nitwit next to you with the Mac 10 is gonna ask you "what's wrong with my gun" while pointing it at youdavidtx wrote:I shot skeet at ARC once - it's about an hour from my house.
