Well, I guess this is a LEO contact sort of.

We stopped for gas at about 8 PM on Saturday. My wife had been chatting on the phone for about 15 minutes and didn't give it a rest. I jumped out and started pumping the gas. After a few minutes, my wife (still on the phone) decides she needs to powder something, gets out of the car and goes inside. Out of habit she hit the door lock button right before she shut the door. When I finish with the gas pump I try to get into the driver side door and find it locked with my keys in the ignition and my wife's keys in her purse on the back seat. To say the least, I was not amused.

The young ladies working the counter suggested calling the Sheriff's Office and said if certain deputies are on duty they are very helpful - my wife figures we've got nothing to loose and gives them a call.

Two deputies show up in a cruiser within about 5 minutes. They asked my name and if this was my vehicle. I give them my name and confirm vehicle ownership. They call in the plate number and get a response (that I could not hear) within a few seconds. Then they get a kit out of the trunk of the cruiser and have the door open within a couple of minutes. They never asked for ID so I didn't produce my CHL or announce the fact that I was armed.

While they were working on the door my wife came out of the store and was joking with them. She kept saying that it was my fault because I left my keys in the ignition. One of the deputies said, "But you left your purse on the seat at a gas station" to her and then "Man, I'm trying to help you" to me. My wife said, "I wasn't going to put my Coach purse on the nasty floor in that bathroom" and everybody laughed. I pointed out that the one who hit the lock button had to have been the one who locked us out of the car and that wasn't me.

After thanking the deputies profusely and as we were getting in our car my wife says something about how glad she was that they were willing and able to help us. And then she says something along the lines of, "If you guys hadn't shown up he probably would have killed me". I'm thinking, oh no, don't say anything like that to cops - even in jest. So we just get into our car and leave.

All in all it was a great encounter and I really appreciate the help from Chambers County's finest.

I never leave my keys in the cars - purse or ignition.

I'm glad that my truck won't allow the doors to lock if the key is in the ignition, unless the doors are closed.

Just like people need spare ammo, people need spare keys.

I have a spare truck key in my wallet, as well as a hide-a-key container
with a spare key hidden on my truck. Plus residence keys in the same
2 places.

Since modern vehicle keys generally are of the "electronic chip" kind,
my spare keys won't actually start the truck, but they will unlock the door,
which is probably where the keys will get locked in.

For a very minimal price, you can get 2 extra keys made and never have
to wonder how you are going to get home, or how much damage the slim jim
job may do to your vehicle.

Plus if you have to call a locksmith to get you in,
the wait could be long and they might charge you big $$$

You spend serious money on your guns. Why not a few dollars at Wally
World for extra keys? Plus you can check the ammo counter right
next to Automotive and make an "ammo for sale" entry!!!

One thing to love about Volkswagens. You have to work at it to lock your keys in the car.

My wife's car won't let you lock the doors with the key in the ignition unless the doors are closed and you press the lock button. I guess you could lock the doors by reaching in through an open window but is the car really locked?

I know the Chambers County Sheriff he's a great guy and insists on his deputies being polite and helpful.

They certainly were that evening and I really appreciated it.

My car has a keyless ignition AND it won't let you lock the doors if the keys are anywhere in the car. I don't know how many times I have had to search through the car to try to find the key that fell under the seat or is hiding in my coat pocket or whatever. BUT, at least I have never been able to lock the keys in the car!
