Republican Governors debate

Re: Republican Governors debate
I watched all but the first 10 minutes or so. I forgot it was on at first. I missed the registration remarks because my daughter started complaining about missing her shows.
KBH sort of sidestepped the abortion question, but not really. IIRC, the question was would she like to see Roe v. Wade reversed. She stated that she was against abortion, but that if RvW were reversed she feared that some states would make it illegal, while some would become havens for abortionists and the laws would become even further relaxed to allow very late term abortions. So, I took her stance to mean that she thought having RvW in place somehow made it better overall.

Re: Republican Governors debate
Dont even know why they asked the abortion issue, the Gov has little control about that issue in this state.

I guess its just a stupid Litmus test.
I think Perry just brings this up because he has an eye on the White house or Senate

Abortion is a personal matter between a woman, her sperm donor, their conscious and their God. It is not a matter of the state.marksiwel wrote:Dont even know why they asked the abortion issue, the Gov has little control about that issue in this state.

Only if you do not view it as murder. if one does view it as murder, then it is a matter of state. Not trying to convince you that it is or isn't, but only to explain why some (self included) would view it as a matter of state.Oldgringo wrote:Abortion is a personal matter between a woman, her sperm donor, their conscious and their God. I believe that Perry was trying to show that KBH wasn't a true conservative. That is what a lot of the debate was over, was upon whom should the mantle of conservatism be placed upon. A governor does have something to do with abortion in as far as seeking limitations and restrictions on abortions within his state, does he not?

This question wasn't posed by Perry, though, was it? I thought the moderator asked it.

Possibly so, but I was thinking that at one point when Perry asked her a round of questions, that one was about her signing a memorial bill in favor of Rowe Vs Wade.C-dub wrote:This question wasn't posed by Perry, though, was it? I thought the moderator asked it.

Re: Republican Governors debate
Without treading too deep into THAT issue, the Supreme Court of the US and Senate would have more of a say on that matter than the Gov of Texas, really Lt Gov has more power than the Gov himself, he's just a figure head.wgoforth wrote:Only if you do not view it as murder. if one does view it as murder, then it is a matter of state. Re: Republican Governors debate
While Roe Vs Wade ruled that a woman may have an abortion up to point of viability, each state sets different limitations. So yes, Supreme Court ruled it, which basically means states may not forbid, but can restrict. ie, 24 states banned late term abortion. Each state is free to require parental notification or not and when they count "point of viability" to be.
Again, not seeking to convert anyone on the issue itself, but to explain the politics of state restrictions vs federal law on the issue. I think our current administration thinks Roe vs Wade is the two ways of getting across the Potomac.
And yes, I agree that Perry is not a true conservative. In fact, I doubt a true conservative would be electable.

Re: Republican Governors debate
This thread probably ought to go over to the politics subject area here on TXCHL.
My opinion worth less than 2 cents...
Perry is abrasive, Medina is a lightweight, KBH is a George W. Bush Republican who helped lose the Congress in 2006. The Democrats are worse than all of them. Perry is a strong CHL advocate and would sign school carry, open carry, parking lot, etc bill. He's said it. Medina undoubtedly would too, but she's a fringe candidate. I'd rather have KBH in the senate until someone more conservative could beat here in the primary. I'm not going to "withhold" my vote for Perry (if he wins primary) because that is basically a vote for the Democrat, who will undoubtedly be like Anne Richards. Memba her? Blocked CHL, even opposed a referendum, until GW came on the scene. Nuff said.

Re: Republican Governors debate
Welcome to federalism, Senator. That is exactly how it is supposed to work. Not just on abortion, but alcohol, drugs, seat belts, guns, speed limits, and education. The states are not political subdivisions of the union.C-dub wrote:KBH sort of sidestepped the abortion question, but not really. IIRC, the question was would she like to see Roe v. Wade reversed. Even as badly distorted as our Civics textbooks are, I swear the average 8th grader understands government better than 99% of elected officials.

Re: Republican Governors debate
I think Medina has my vote. I register Rep. so I can vote in primaries, but I usually vote for the Libertarian in the end. Most of the Libertarians have seem to be getting behind Medina for the last several months.
Was it just me or was anyone else looking at Medina and thinking... Peggy Hill????
