So, made my own gun-vault for my car

Step 1: Go to Academy and purchase the "ADG Sports" $50 front-loading gun vault.

Step 2: Go to lowes and buy 6 feet of 3/8's inch stainless steel cable, and 2 of those wire-grips that can be used to double the wire over and make a loop with it. Also get a nice sized key-lock if you don't have one.

Step 3: Take it all back home, turn the vault over, and drill out the mounting holes in the bottom of the vault to be a little bit wider so the cable fits into it nicer.

Step 4: Run the cable through the holes, then put the 2 wire-grips on each end to make loops at each end.

Step 5: Smother both wire-grips with enough JB Weld to withstand a direct blast from a space shuttle's engine.

Step 6: Find a place to lock the gun vault to, and enjoy!


I'm personally quite happy with how it came out, and think it'll take somebody a good amount of time to get into that vault if they were really working at it. One thing you have to be especially careful with however is the ends of that cable. Those strands of steel will tear your fingers up!

Good job. The lock box in my truck is a Brinks & I had a sheet metal fabricator make a mounting bracket for it to be bolted to the floor. If someone comes prepared to get in it, they will do it in a couple of minutes I imagine. For the snatch & grab thief it is secure. Two minutes in most parking lots is a long time for a thief to advertise his business. But, when you consider how white the cloud that most folks walk around in, he might even get some help with a good lie about loosing the key.

Instead of Lowes for cable, could you maybe use some of that plastic-coated cable they sell at bike shops? They come pre-made with the loops already finished, so you wouldn't have the fingers being torn up problem, but I don't know if the loops will fit through the holes...

Nice Idea! I used a bicycle chain to secure my box =)
