Long road trip in TX, but I also have to go into Mexico

#1

Post by GrandmasterB »

I have to take the whole family on a long road trip tomorrow for a medical procedure for my 18 month old daughter. We will be driving several hours across TX, so I want my concealed handgun with me. But the procedure will have to be just across the border in Mexico (long story, but this is one of those "must do" things that isn't yet federally approved and legal yet in the U.S.

So I know how un-gun-friendly Mexico is, but I don't want to leave my pistol at home for a marathon road trip. I was thinking to bring a locking case or perhaps two -- one for the loaded mag and one for the empty gun and just lock them both when we drive across the border and then re-arm myself when we cross back into TX.

Is this smart or stupid? What would you do? Any advice from anyone who visits border towns?

Thanks!!!

If you are driving your own car accross the border leave all guns and ammo at HOME.
Seriously, do not even take a single bullet over the border.

What High Velocity said - - - Ditto, in spades. Tommy Bean of Vidor, went through years of legal troubles because of a few .22 shells in his truck when he drove acrosss the border.

Don't take it across Byron, you might rent a locker or find a reliable dealer to leave it with.

Byron:
It's already been said, but do not take a gun or a single round of ammo into Mexico!! Find some place in Texas to leave the pistol and ammo, then get them back when you are back in Texas. I'd call a local PD in the town where you cross and see if they'd keep them for you until you get back. They may or may not, but I'd be worth a try. Heck, you can rent a safe deposit box at a bank and leave them there until you get back.

Don't take them into Mexico!!

You might also try a pawn shop or gun dealer to see if they will hold it for you. Good luck with the medical part of your trip.

I'm ditto-ing what some of the others have said...

I don't think I caught where you were crossing the border yet, but think about a place where you can securely store your weapon on the Texas side of the border, while you're in Mexico...

Most of the big border towns on our side may afford a few places where you can do this...

By all means get a strongbox that only you have the key or combo to, and then store the firearm in it, where you choose to do so...

My guess would be to call ahead to the bordertowns PD and ask them if they could do it for you...Never hurts to ask...

Good luck with everything...

Drop the guns off somewhere as discussed above, park the car and take a taxi across the border. There is no way I would take my personal vehicle across at a border town.

the border town cops are the most crooked, well, i won't even dignify them with the term 'police.' one of my co-workers has family down there and they frequently run from the police. 5 or 6 guys in a pickup with no radios, and most of them don't even have guns. he's been robbed by the police down there several times.

i say leave the gun and take plenty of money so you can buy your car back from the police.

I hope you are referring to the Mexican side of the border...To which I would agree to a certain extent...You just got to know how to relate to them, and you'd be surprised what greases the skids...

We never hung around the immediate border...We headed inland towards Monterrey...The only stop you officially have is 26 km inside the border there, and that is a halfway decent stop...They are about the same as the Border Patrol on our side of the border (attitude-wise)...

Like I said, its all how you relate to them...Matter of fact we may have a trip planned for Late June/early July to head down there...Our POV, clothes and thats about all we need...

The "other thing" I usually take, is left in a secure facility on our side of the border...I have yet to work a deal to not have to stop and secure it before heading across...

he said he's never had a problem with the federal police, the ones who generally work the border, but the city cops are horrible. his wife's grandmother died a few months ago and he and his wife went down to get some of her furniture that the family wanted them to have. they rented a truck to bring it back. got all the way to the border and the local cops stopped them. charged him $500 ($100 per officer) to leave with the stuff.

Trip went fine -- thanks for all the prayers and advice.

We ended up driving on Friday and staying the night at a Holiday Inn on the TX side of the border. They had safety deposit boxes available for storing valuables. :)

On Saturday (today) we only had to drive about 1 block into Mexico and get the treatment for my daughter and then turn around and drive home. We were out of the U.S. for about two hours total.

Good to hear all went well. Hopefully the treatment was a success.
