Class recomendations for the DFW area??

Hi all newbe here. I'm a former CHL holder in North Carolina and have been putting off getting my CHL here in Texas way too long. It's time to quit being a sheep. Do you guys have any good recomendations for instructors in the DFW area (closer to Ft. Worth), or ones to avoid? Thanks for any help you guys have.

Thanks Joe, yeah I went to their website but the first class they are having is on the 14th. I was looking for something a little sooner but guess I can wait. I can't wait to get get the CHL in my pocket. It's kind of weird why the rush all of a sudden. I had a dream night before last that my pregnant wife was kidnapped from right beside me while out walking around and I had no gun and could do nothing to stop them. It was very unsettling to say the least and has bothered me since. Anyway I'm going to take care of that, lol.

I don't know how long you have been in Texas, but are you aware of the MPA (Motorist Protection Act)?
Even without a CHL, you are allowed to carry a weapon with you in your vehicle at all times.
It must be concealed. The method of concealment is up to you.

Since you have a gun, I wonder if your expecting bride has a craving for strange foods, or maybe
a cute little pink-gripped pistol for her purse? :-)

Thanks Surprise, I didn't know the details on MPA. I think if little mama saw one of those cute little pink guns she would want one. Can't wait to get to class and get the ball rolling.

I don't want to name where I went but the ad said, Guaranteed to Pass. Out of the 15-16 people there about 4 did not own guns and several never shot a gun before. They rented a Glock and got a box of ammon. One person shot FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER by beginning the qualifying section. I would guess 40-50% hit inside the dark area. This person passed. Others barely knew the business end and the instructor did some speed coaching along the way.

It gives me the willies knowing there are some folks walking around with a loaded gun and a state-issued license and may not know a mag release from a safety. At least I can spot a bad driver and move out of the way.

I'll consider the ethics of using instructors who are not using their position to weed out the unsafe when its time to renew.

In Fort Worth 'area' - give Winchester Gallery/Shooting gallery ( http://winchestergallery.com/) at 820 and Lancaster a call. Good instructors and everything included. Went there for my renewal couple years ago - easy breezy. Good shooting facility as well.

If you live in the McKinney / Allen area I can recommend Mike Howard. Good guy and a good class. He has a range on his property which is a help. He is a former Secret Service agent and was one of Kennedy's security guards in Washington and did some of the investigative follow-up in Dallas. Makes for some interesting side bars during class. If you don't attend Mike's class, I would recommend adding some preference points to any class where they also do the fingerprinting and photos. It is a pain getting prints anywhere else, and I've read a number of posts on this forum where fingerprints taken by Fast had to be redone.

There are $65 el cheapo classes and there are over $125 ritzy classes. The el cheapo classes typically require you to take care of your photographs on your own and arrange with the police for your fingerprint on your own. The ritzy classes should include professional photos and fingerprints on the day of the class. These professionals should ensure that your application won't get hung up on a bad photo nor fingerprint. This will prevent any further delays to your application.

I went to a ritzy class and I recommend it. The instructor was informative and interesting. They stressed range safety and they had real police officers take care of your pictures and/or fingerprints. They made sure that I filled out my paperwork correctly, to avoid any additional delays. I went to the DFW gun range: http://www.dfwgun.com/ . The Bullet Trap in Plano has a class, but last time I checked, the fingerprints were done on a different day than the class day. This is inconvenient for the student. If you pay ritzy class prices, you should get all the conveniences of a ritzy class, so that's why I did not go with the Bullet Trap. I did not go with an el cheapo class because I wanted all the conveniences of a ritzy class. Plus, none of the el cheapo classes in town had any openings for months and I didn't want to wait months to take my class, in addition to the months it takes for the CHL to be approved.

I took my CHL class from these folks in Arlington in July. Did the shooting portion at Winchester Gallery, and they served us pizza when we took our lunch break after shooting. It was a good experience.
