Stopped by Keller PD
Ok, I have lived in Keller for 5 years now. I know Keller PD runs traffic pretty heavy in certain areas. I havent had a traffic ticket in about 13 years and I have never had to show a LEO my CHL......until last night. So here is the deal:
I am driving west bound on 1709 at about 10PM, headed home. Its posted 40 MPH. I had just passed a Keller PD unit and saw him whip around in my rear view mirror. I figured he probably got a call. Then I notice the lights come on. I figure he MUST be after someone else but there isnt any other vehicles that I can see. So I signal, turn off 1709 onto a side street and stop. I turn the interior light on in my truck, roll down the window, and shut the vehicle off. As he is walking to my truck it hits me. I got three 1911's in my possession. (yea, not a crime but made me uneasy under the circumstance)
See I had just left my friends house who i had bought 2 custom 1911s from. Plus I had my own carry gun on me. The two other guns were in cases (and unloaded) but sitting right up in the front seat.
The officer approaches my window shining his light right in my face. He says his name...which I forget...and informs me I was going 52 MPH in the 40 MPH zone. Well I am getting a ticket. Now, I notice he is younger than me....I figure mid 20's...but he is polite and professional. I didnt think I was going 52 but I am not going to argue. I just said to him that I apologize and offered no excuse. He asks for my license and insurance which are already in my hands along with my CHL. He looks at my info, asks if I still at my current address and asks me to sit tight.
Now I know he had to see the gun bag and gun case in my passenger seat but he didnt say a word. In hindsight it probably looked like range gear or something, but it was 10 PM at night. Never asked where my weapon was, etc. He is gone for a moment and returns in less than 45 seconds and just said to remember its 40 MPH. I thank him, we shake hands and off he goes.
He was all business but yet polite. If I was indeed going that fast he could easily have written me a ticket because I fully expected to get one.

Patrick, that is a tough stretch of road, if you would have been futher east, Southlake probably would not have been so easy on you. I am amazed he did not ask about what you had in the front seat, especially after you gave him your CHL. This serves as a reminder for me to slow down,if I get a ticket, that slows down my gun buying.maximus2161 wrote:Ok, I have lived in Keller for 5 years now. I'm suprised he shook your hand. When I wroked in LE I never did so and they taught us not to at the academy from almost day one. Not on traffic stops are other such citizen contacts.
My posts on this website are worth every cent you paid me for them.

Re: Stopped by Keller PD
I am not surprised that the officer shook his hand. I can understand the apprehension towards doing so in general, but a CHL, who has behaved appropriately and cordially, should not be considered a risk by the end of a traffic stop. I have shaken the hand of the last three officers who have pulled me over and thanked them for their service to their community/the state of Texas, depending upon if they were local LEO's or DPS. One of them apparently thought about it for a second (a local LEO, but not local to where I live) and the other two (DPS troopers) immediately shook my hand.
Maximus, you ran into one of the many very professional LEO's we have in this great state. Remember that having a gun in your car is now covered in multiple ways, if you have your CHL, so, while you might get hassled about it a little (disarmed temporarily), you should have no legal worries.

Remember, in a life-or-death situation, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

Having 3 1911's shouldn't be an issue either. Like my CHL instructor noted: One of the great things about Texas is you can carry as much iron as you want to, so long as you keep to the rules.
Sorry about the stop, but glad to hear that it turned out OK. Good job on your part being civil, respectful and a good representative for the CHL community.

Congratulations on a good stop. I only wish we had more professional LE on the force like the one you met. I realize that they have a hard job and I am thankful for their service.

Re: Stopped by Keller PD
I just posted a story about Keller PD in Trophy Club. . . but I have another Keller story.
I was pulled over by Keller on 377 (northbound just before 1709 and the old town area - where the speed reduces a few times in a row) about 18 months ago. He said I was going about 5 over and asked for my info.
I pulled over on the shoulder, turned my truck off, and kept my hands on the steering wheel. When he got to the truck, he asked for my DL and insurance, so I removed my seatbelt, got out my wallet, took out the DL and CHL, opened the glove box, took out the insurance, and handed all three to him. While I was doing this he asked if I was in a hurry. I explained that I wasn't - but I had just bought this truck and the tires were two sizes larger than stock, so I suspected my speedometer might be off but had no idea how much, so I was staying with traffic until I could get it calibrated.
By this time he'd seen the CHL and suddenly his whole demeanor changed. He asked if I had my firearm, and I replied, "Yes sir, it's in the console." He smiled and said, "Well, let's just leave it there." haha
He went to his car for about 3 minutes before coming back, handing me my cards, and telling me to be careful and have a great night.
In my experience, Keller is usually watching 377, 1709, and Rufe Snow looking for drunk drivers after dark. They also watch parts of 170 and 114 for Trophy Club and Westlake. They'll use any violation to pull you over and talk to you. They do tend to be a younger force, but I've never had an issue.

Re: Stopped by Keller PD
I had a runin a few weeks ago by the keller PD and it was great. I swear that the CHL isnt suppose to be a get out of jail free card, but it was what saved my behind. I was speeding BIG time and had an expried sticker. The officer, after getting my CHL and stuff told me to slow down and sent me on my way.
I was very thankfull not to be in trouble.

I'm in Keller also. I tell all my friends to be sure they have all the lights burning (in both senses of the phrase), use signals etc. after 10:00 in Keller.fickman wrote: In my experience, Keller is usually watching 377, 1709, and Rufe Snow looking for drunk drivers after dark. They watch every vehicle for probable cause to stop and check for (lack of) sobriety or contraband.

If you read the Keller Citizen police blotter, then you'd agree it seems they spend most of the daylight hours busting shoplifters at Kohl's.Rex B wrote:I'm in Keller also. Re: Stopped by Keller PD
First post, Keller resident. Thanks for the posts, I've not had any contacts with KPD but do know their penchant for DWI arrests and yep, I'm sure enough OK with that!! I travel extensively by car all over TX and OK and have many contacts with LEO's. Most often the reason for the stop is somewhat contrived but I've found the same thing others have said here, treat them with respect and courtesy and you'll get the same in kind. Still waiting for that first stop since getting the CHL. Wish me luck...

Seems to be several of us Kellerites.
But I'm on the wrong side of the tracks ;)
