I didn't say she was too bright. Heck, she couldn't understand why my wife was upset or why she was fired.

I've known people with that sense of entitlement. You run into it when you lend someone money and then ask it to be repaid. They act like you're killing them.

The story we got about why the DA didn't present the case to the DA (and she signed a sworn affidavit admitting the entire thing) was that the DA "chooses not to prosecute victimless crimes".

I'll bet they prosecute illegal drug users.

Sometimes it isn't worthwhile to convict someone and throw her in jail or have her put a burden on the probation system for years. We all want to be tough on crime, but we don't want to pay for it.

She was subsequently convicted on a similar charge. No fine. Two days in jail. Two days in jail means that you are booked in between 11:30 pm and midnight and get out as soon after midnight as they can process you.

I can only pray that all future identity thieves in that county use the name and social security number of the DA. In fact, if I knew it I would be tempted to post their PII on the internet to sow the seeds. And they won't mind because it's a victimless crime. Right?

If she was convicted of a felony, it pretty much guarantees that she won't be doing that kind of work any longer.

While identity theft is despicable, credit-card companies make it easy. They could reduce it quite a bit, but they would rather issue cards quickly. It's similar to the way that retail stores enable shoplifting.

Small town in New York, last week: A would-be robber rang the bell at a bank branch that was not open for business. The only employee on the premises opened the door [why?]. The robber produced a pistol. The female employee grabbed the pistol and broke off the barrel. It was a pellet gun.

The robber fled, got into his vehicle, and drove right in front of a police car. Busted.

In Brant Township, Michigan, Sunday, a 54-year-old woman called the police to report the theft of her marijuana plants.

[A police spokesman] said the 54-year-old woman was arrested early Sunday after reporting two men had broken into her home in Brant Township, 80 miles north-northwest of Detroit.

He said the woman told deputies the men fled after one of them demanded her marijuana plants.

What could she have been thinking?

If, as reported, robbers broke into her home to steal marijuana plants, it must have been known that she grew pot and possibly was a dealer.

A 28-year-old man is in the Travis County Jail today after officials say he fired a handgun at point-blank range in the face of an Austin police officer responding to an emergency call in Northeast Austin.

Christopher Rodriguez was charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer, a first-degree felony, according to the arrest affidavit filed today.

The officer came to Rodriguez’ second-floor apartment in the 12100 block of N. Interstate 35 answering a 911 hang-up called placed at 12:33 a.m. Tuesday, the affidavit said. The officer knocked and through a window saw the suspect coming to the door, the affidavit said.

The officer identified himself from outside the door as an Austin police officer. When the suspect opened the door, he pointed a chrome pistol at the officer’s face and pulled the trigger, the affidavit said.

When the suspect’s gun didn’t fire, the officer stepped back, drew his service handgun and raised it to fire. The suspect dropped his handgun and repeatedly yelled that the gun wasn’t real, the affidavit said.

After arresting Rodriguez, the officer examined the handgun, which was a replica of a revolver with a metal plate built into it to keep the hammer from striking the bullets in the cylinder, according to the affidavit.

Rodriguez is being held on $40,000 bail, court records show.

"LEBANON, Pa. (AP) -- Police in central Pennsylvania say they've nabbed a real pothead.

They say an officer spotted 29-year-old Cesar Lopez inside a convenience store with a bag of marijuana stuck to his forehead.

Investigators say Lopez was seen peering inside his baseball cap early Saturday morning in Lebanon, about 75 miles northwest of Philadelphia. When Lopez looked up, the officer noticed a small plastic bag appearing to contain marijuana stuck to his forehead.

Police say the officer peeled the bag off Lopez's forehead and placed him under arrest. He has been charged with drug possession. Police do not know whether Lopez has an attorney.

Authorities say the sweatband of a baseball cap is a frequent hiding place for drugs."

PATERSON, N.J. — Tracking down three alleged home invaders became easier for Paterson police after one of the bandits dropped the keys to their getaway car. Authorities said the gun-toting men entered a city apartment early Friday, expecting to find loads of money.

They woke one man and demanded cash as they tried unsuccessfully to bind his arms. But the man began screaming and fought with one bandit, stabbing him with scissors before another suspect beat him with a shotgun.

Realizing they targeted the wrong residence, the men then fled with just a three-foot, beer bottle-shaped piggy bank containing $2 in change.

Police soon arrived and, after finding the lost keys in a bedroom, used the car alarm to locate a deserted vehicle in a nearby parking lot. Its registration led them to the alleged robbers, who were sitting in a taxi outside one suspect's home.

The three men face robbery, burglary and weapons charges.
