It Worked

#1

Post by CoveRuger »

Three weeks ago I took my wife to the range, but instead of just taking her I took her and a friend. It was air-conditioned and I turned them over to one employees for instruction. I moved over to another lane and let them be. The next week she invited another girlfriend to come shooting with us. They have had a great time together and I just stand over to the side and buy the ammo. Tomorrow will be the third Monday in a row!! I win. And I now have a new shooting partner. Score!!

Welcome to the forum and congratulations.
I am scared of empty guns and keep mine loaded at all times. The family knows the guns are loaded and treats them with respect. Loaded guns cause few accidents; empty guns kill people every year. -Elmer Keith. 1961

That's cool, but you need to prepare yourself mentally for when she outshoots you. Repeat after me: "It's only a game. It's only a game. It's only a #@$%! game."

Great news! I had to turn my dear wife over to a friend (and fellow board member) for shooting instruction. I did my best and learned that it just does not work!

She had a completely different attitude after her instruction. I have a great time shooting with my wife. There is no better shootin' partner to have!

BTW, it helps support the addiction when the wife understands it

Well, guys, I'd say that you're on the right track! Playin' "mind games" really DOES help some time. ;-) Encouraging wife units to invite a friend along was an EXcellent idea! For some reason, we women like to shoot with other women. There's a comradery there for some reason.

Husbands, don't teach your wives to be shooters (sung to "Don't let your sons grow up to be cowboys...") Encourage 'em to look elsewhere for instruction. If YOU teach 'em, it could be interpreted as their "being pushed" into shooting. But, if someone ELSE teaches 'em...they're "being lead or guided." (Much better connotation than having been PUSHED.)

So, good thinkin' on your part, CoveRuger!

I thought is was supposed to be: "Mamma's don't let your Cowboys grow up to be Babies"!

And yes, I agree entirely with your assessment about wives/girlfriends accepting instruction from their mates. It is not impossible, but it seems to work out better if a competent third party is involved in the training process.

Great advice.

Hmmm...I think ir IA "Don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys". At any rate, ya' got the idea.

Glad you agree — since you got it "from the horses mouth." My reputation has always been that I shoot straight in ALL ways. Or, put another way, "If ya' don't wanna KNOW...don't ask Dickson! She'll TELL ya!"

Nope, I meant it just how I printed it (in jest).

"Don't let your Cowboys grow up to be Babies". At least... thats my rendition of the song.

Women and Shooting

#11

Post by Sigirl »

CoveRuger,

You are one smart man... The best thing a husband can do if want to get your wife into shooting is don't try to teach her yourself, get her an instructor.

About a year ago my husband wanted to get me into shooting... I really didn't like guns at the time, or know much about them. Now I shoot tactical at least twice a month, sometimes four times a month or 800 rounds. I just finished the NRA Certified Instructor Course and I'm leaving for Austin tomorrow for the CHL Instructor Course.

Some of the coolest things I've ever done I've learned from males; motorcycle riding, backpacking and shooting. You guys just have to be smart enough like CoveRuger to know how to go about it, and win!

PPM,

Are there really other women out there so close to my area who shoot ?!?!
I need women friends who love to shoot as much as I do and so far I have not been able to find them. I'm right outside of Tomball. Where do you shoot?

Sigirl,
I don't know if you would want to make the trip, but PSC Shooting Club in Friendswood has a Womens' Program that meets on the first Saturday of each month. Visit the club website, http://www.psc-range.com to get more information. It's an active program that averages about 12-14 shooters per month, occassionally getting as many as 20.
Thanx,
TraCoun
