Just recently moved to Brownwood, TX. Waaaaaaaay into the mall is a "Mall Etiquette" sign, that way down the list states "no weapons, legal or illegal." I realize that it is not the proper sign nor properly displayed, but still doesn't mean one could not get hassled about it, be asked to leave or even have cops called on them. I called the Property Manager's office of the mall and was informed that it is intended to include CHL holders. I informed her that there must be a properly displayed 30.06 sign. She said that this was to keep store owners and patrons from being nervous if they thought someone might have one. Of course if they thought I did, then it wasn't concealed properly. Of course signs like this ONLY affect the good guys as bad guys could care less about the signs. Now that they have informed me that I cannot carry, do I continue to ignore the sign or vote with my feet? BTW, the mall is having most of their stores to move to the currently closed strip mall anyway soon.

You have hit upon one of many reasons why it's a good idea not to mention non-compliant signs. It gives them the opportunity to give you verbal notice that they don't want you there, and it gives them the opportunity to post a compliant sign.

As for whether you continue to carry/patronize the businesses, I can't really say.

No, it can be verbal communication also as per PC 30.06(b). It can be either written or oral.

That verbal notice is probably sufficient, if you gave your real name and if they make a record of telling you.

OTOH, unlike KC5AV I always notify them about non-compliant signs in hopes that they will go through the effort, expense, and just plain ugliness of upgrading their sign(s). I tell them that if they do not post compliant signs then they are not telling CHL holders anything and that they may be putting themselves in line for a lawsuit if they attempt to arrest a CHL holder without displaying a compliant sign. I also include the CHL card text.

Yeah, i simply called them and they never asked my name. My concern was that although it is concealed, should security ask about the suspicious print on my pocket or the odd pack on my belt, that with their lack of knowledge, I still could be in trouble.

In addition to the interior signs, there is a gunbuster sign somewhere on the main front door. All of these non compliant signs can be ignored with your chl. However, just inside the main front door, is the Social Security Ofice. This is a federal facility and their No Gun signs will probably be valid. There is also an armed security guard just inside their door.

I just try to avoid the place entirely.

What do bad guys call a mall? A TRE (Target Rich Environment) That's why I try to avoid shopping in malls. When I do have to go into a mall I bump up to condition Orange.

Making the matter even weirder.... I saw an older State Trooper in the Quick Mart, so I said "your someone I'd like to pick the brains of. Just moved here, and while at the mall, I noticed waay in the back in tiny letters is a "Mall Etiquette" sign. (it's 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper with about 20 different rules). And on down the list it says no weapons, legal or illegal." I went on to say that I had a CHL, and since they had no 30.06 sign, what was a LEO's view of it. He replied "Don't you dare carry in that mall. I used to provide security there and if caught it will be a felony." I asked "Even without the required 30.06?" He said "Yes sir. They used to have the sign, don't know where it's gone, but you do not carry." Wow. So, sounds like although I have my right to carry, it could still involve jail and lawyers until cleared.

As to "concealed is concealed"... that is true, but I have been asked by stores what was in my hip pack. (They probably were concerned with shoplifting). Another time, a store employee kept eying the bulge in my pocket, although no outline could be made. So kinda betwen a rock and hardplace.
