Retired my gig guitar, Guitar Pics

Thought this might be an interesting off topic. A guitar picture thread.

This is has been my gig guitar for the last 8 years. Finally has gotten to the point I wouldn't be able to replace the signatures of songwriters and pickers that I've played with and have gotten to sign it. Lately, I have been nervous that it might be stolen or damaged. Besides that, it's out of signature room and use, sweat, and deodorant has been erasing others. It been replaced with another HD-35 as a gig/truck guitar so I won't worry so much about it. Sentimentally, the signed one is irreplaceable.

It's a 2000 Martin D-35 with a Fishman blender installed. I have in the past played out as many as 6 nights a week with as many different bands here in central Texas. It has lived in my pickup truck for the last eight or nine years until this month. It is now retired from the road and resides as my house guitar. It will probably self destruct living in a controlled atmosphere.

It's last offical duty on the road was to play at Guinness World Record set in Luckenback last month for the most guitars playing the same song at the same time. 1996 Breedlove C25/W - gorgeous figured walnut with a redwood top
1991ish Seagull S-6 Deluxe, extremely modified (braces shaved, etc.), from when they were still hand-made
1984 Fender Esprit, refinished transparent orange (early 80s DiMarzio PAF bridge, vintage Burny neck pickup)
all of the following are heavily-modified player's guitars if I didn't build them myself from scratch
1999 Fender MIM Strat (Wilkinson VS100G, contoured neck heel, Fralin SP43 bridge, 57/62 neck, lipstick middle)
1999 MIM Tele (RI compensated 3-saddle bridge, Duncan Broadcaster bridge, classic Tele neck pickups)
2005ish no-name SG knock-off (DiMarzio PAF bridge, junk-box humbucker neck)
date-unknown Ibanez TM71 in silver (DiMarzio PAF bridge, vintage Burny neck pickup)
80s Peavey Predator body & neck refinished and made into a whole new kind of guitar (Wilkinson VS100G, GFS Mean 90 bridge, 57/62 neck)
in-progress project guitar, MM Axis-alike, will have VS100G, DiMarzio 36th Anniv. bridge, still deciding on the neck pickup)

I tend to rotate these guitars. Lately I have been playing the former Peavey Predator with my strat as a backup most often. I'll take my Tele to rehearsal tonight. Probably play the TM71 tomorrow night, or the SG.

I probably have a couple of other guitars tucked away somewhere that are not in the current rotation.

I have 5 guitars.
1 Dean Cadillac, purple
1 Jackson Dinky
1 Shecter Baritone (scorpion tribal)
2 Ibanez 7 strings (the AX model, not the RG. Think Gibson SG body style)
one Ibanez has a Seymour Duncan Invader pickup, which is so hot, you can talk through it.
the other has a DiMarzio, which is warm, but not too hot.

I play through a ADA MP1 preamp, stereo out into a TubeWorks ProValve stereo power amp. stereo out into two 4x12 Marshall cabs. the old Vintage 1960s.
I have a DigiTech Whammy pedal, and a Dunlop 535Q wah pedal. I also use a Digitech rack delay box for my "echo."




no, I don't have the Mesa Head/Cab anymore. and yes, I still kick myself everytime I think about it...

I used to do some recording on my computer, with either Acid Pro, or Cubase SX, both great programs.

Don't even get me started on amps. I build hand-made tube guitar amps as a side business. I got me some amps... and pedals... and after running a recording studio for a couple of years I then closing it down, I managed to accumulate a whole pile of other stuff.

I gave up guitar when I busted my hand in a car wreck in 1969. The year before she died my late wife gifted me with a Takamine for Christmas, I have tried to play it and the hand still hurts trying to fret. I suppose I could have worked through it, but I just never really tried. I think I have ruined the guitar by leaving it strung and the neck has warped, but I haven't been able to give it up.

Now I play harmonica, not well, but I enjoy it.

I have to ask if Houston Marchman's sig is on that guitar?

Hey Jim,
I don't think I have ever played with Houston. The signatures are only people that I have played with and specifically got to sign it. Since I am mainly a songwriter and a sideman that plays Mando, there aren't a lot of "front men (or ladies)" signatures that most non-players would know on the guitar.

On the other hand, my wife plays a lot of country with a lot of name players. She is a piano player and still does the opry circuit pretty regularly. She has played with the house bands with the Lockhart, Llano, Mason, and Georgetown Oprys, etc.. Still plays in the house band at Lockhart. Opened at the La Grange Opry last month... that kind of thing.
It's all fun, but with age, you have to be a lot more careful about how much stress you put on your joints, wrists and fingers. I pretty much never exceed three sets a night anymore .....used to play all day, all night.

I just realized you are another gray hair....... Where were you playing? Singer-songwriter?

I can remember jamming all night with my piano player wife, them were indeed the days. My late wife had her music degree from the State University of New York and maintained a relationship with the music department, a ready pool of students for her, and we got insider and backstage entree in a variety of music venues. Once even had Marian McPartland at our house for a jam session, when she, Marian, declared that our Yamaha C5 piano had one of the nicest actions she had ever played.

Yeah, them was the days.

Nice guitars!!! I have a Martin D-42 at home. Don't dare bring it out here with me. Wouldn't care to put it through the heat and dust, not to mention wouldn't want to have to bug out and leave it behind for some camel jockey.

Rarely ever write anymore, occasionally do sing, but those pictures were taken at a concert put on by my church's worship team of almost all original songs written by band members for that concert. I used to play venues large and small, big open stages, small dingey stages behind chicken wire, but I've been playing pretty much exclusively within the context of being a worship leader for years now. The concert CD/DVD is called "Let the Morning Come," and it is available on iTunes. The church is 121 Community Church in Grapevine.
