Got pulled over by Keller'a finest
I am thoroughly convinced that my CHL (and my wonderful demeanor) is what saved me from getting 2 tickets and going to jail tonight. I was driving the backroads to get home when I got lit up. Pulled over, engine off, hands on steering wheel.
The officer walked up and I got the "I'm officer so-and-so" and do you realize how fast you were going!! I am not saying this to make it sound like he was being full of himself, just to explain that I was apparently in a world of trouble. Anyway, He told me that in addition to my speed, my sticker had expired and they are suppose to put call a tow truck and put me in jail for that. License and insurance please.....
I have been having a very hard time lately and quite frankly my mind was a million miles away from this. Anyway, Handed him my CHL and license. He asked if I had a weapon on me and I said "of course!" and told him where it was. I told him that I would have to lean over where the weapon was to get my insurance and he said fine.
All of my stuff came back legit (I had my sticker just hadnt put it on yet--waiting for my inspection and letting them put on both). Anyway, he, surprisingly said to slow it down and handed me my stuff back.
I know that the CHL isnt a get out of jail free card, but I really dont see any other reason for him to do that. Way to go Keller PD

Thats great, because I got pulled over in Jasper Co. towing a boat. The DPS officer told me to come to the back of the truck. I did and he asked me for lic and insu. I gave him both along with my CHL and he hand he my CHL right back. I told him we had lost the plate on the trip which we did and he still wrote me a ticket. Maybe next time I will have better luck.

Re: Got pulled over by Keller'a finest
Although I haven't been pulled over yet in the 3.5 years since I've been in Texas (keeping fingers crossed), I have found over the years that cops are pretty much the same everywhere you go; and the one thing they all seem to have in common is a pretty strong humanitarian streak. It takes a special kind of individual to put on that uniform every day and then go out and serve an often ungrateful public. One of my good friends is a cop in northern California, in the bay area, and I've heard more than one of his stories about giving someone a break because he sensed that something was troubling this individual, that they already had a very full plate, and the last thing they needed was another unhappy thing to deal with.
I have seen at least one member of this board who is, or was (I don't remember), an LEO who made a comment to the effect that "my job was to issue the citation. Mercy is the judge's job." And that is fine, for the most part, because in most situations, the ticket is exactly what the driver needed to get in order to modify their behavior, or at least, to punish them for refusing to modify it. But part of what cops get paid for is to exercise a great deal of judgment, discernment, wisdom, and a smidgen of compassion. How many times would that ticket issued to someone who is already overburdened in life be the one thing that would push him or her over the edge into truly dangerous behavior — when cutting that person some slack with a warning to to "be careful, go home and get some rest," would be exactly what was needed to help that person? Although the Supreme Court has put paid to the first part of the motto says, "to protect and serve," I like to think that most cops never lose sight of either part of that, including the "and serve" part.
I worked closely with a lot of cops for the 5-6 years I worked in an ER, and I am tremendously entertained by the worldview that a lot of cops develop... ...lots of dark humor and great stories. That's why I love blogs like The LawDog Files and Cowtown Cop.
You're correct in that your CHL isn't a "get out of jail free" card, but I am glad that the Keller officer extended you the benefit of the doubt.
One time, a local NYPD precinct station desk sergeant in the Borough of Manhattan made a phone call on my behalf to Western Union (who was refusing to help locate a money-gram that had been sent to me and that they had lost), threatening them with legal action, and then he took up a collection for this young long-haired nobody, gave me a ride to the subway station in a squad car, told the guy in the ticket booth I had been robbed (a flat out lie) and to put me on the train for free. Those guys were the best, and I still get a little misty remembering how much help they were to me at a time when I really needed a little help and didn't have a friend in the world to stand in my corner with me.
God bless all of you who work in Law Enforcement. May you never lose sight of what made you want to become a cop in the first place.

Re: Got pulled over by Keller'a finest
The last time I got stopped I had
...Expired Tag - which I didn't know about because the sticker is now opaque and I never look at them when I’m outside the car.
...Expired inspection - Which I did know about but had been procrastinating
...Expired TDL - which I did not know about. How many of you have checked the expiration date on your drivers’ license lately?
...No insurance card. I just didn’t have it in its slot for some reason.
The only thing I had current was my CHL.
I got the ticket(s) but it was dismissed over the phone. I never received a court date so I called and no one could find the citation.
I don't know if the Montgomery Co. Deputy tossed it because of the CHL (which I doubt seriously), of if he just lost his ticket book, or the clerks lost the paperwork but I do know that in previous encounters, the benefit of the doubt was always more on my side in the past 7 years since I've had a CHL than before.
The first time I got stopped after getting a CHL was for speeding on a section of I-10 near the east side loop where the limit is 60. I was going around 78 or so; basically keeping up with traffic and the officer only wrote me up for 70 in a 60, which apparently still allows defensive driving for a dismissal.
Since then, I might get stopped every year and a half for something; usually an expired something since I do procrastinate but I'm convinced that the CHL does help.
Or maybe I'm just lucky.
My father was career LEO so I’m well aware of the challenges they face and have the utmost respect.

Re: Got pulled over by Keller'a finest
I got pulled over the other night because the red tail light cover on my tactical mini van had fallen off (actually the sealer melted and it slid off...dang texas heat!)
Asked me for the usual paper work, handed my CHL along with it. He asked what I usually carry so I told him. Just got a verbal warning. I asked him if red tape was ok and he said, that would work (until I have to get it inspected). Not a get out of jail free card but good encounter.

Re: Got pulled over by Keller'a finest
One benefit of getting my CHL is that is has turned me into the safest driver in my county! I am paranoid about getting pulled over. It is probably silly, but I would rather avoid displaying the CHL if possible. I have always been a pretty conservative driver anyway, but now-a-days, my hands are at 10 and 2 and I am constantly checking the speed limit. I am sure the cop would be cool, but I would rather not find out.

I'm curious if anyone has had a good encounter with multiple weapons in the vehicle when stopped. I carry and I also keep a weapon stashed in my truck... and then sometimes I take one or two long guns to the range. Kind of makes me look like I'm loaded for bear.

The common theme is that each of you had a good attitude and I'd guess that counts more then a CHL. Although I can't imagine someone having a CHL and NOT having a good attitude with LEO. Having a gun is a huge responsibility and changing the attitude is part of it. LEO, road rage idiots, etc. we get to take the high road. Nice job and glad you got off ...this time.

I received my CHL this Aug. I have been pulled over twice since then!! Both times, I was only going 7 miles over the limit. I have never been pulled over for going less than 10 over before.Hos wrote:The common theme is that each of you had a good attitude and I'd guess that counts more then a CHL. One was a black & white state trooper in Columbus and the second was a Montgomery County Officer in The Woodlands.
In both cases, I showed my License and CHL and was handed the CHL back with nothing said. Also, in both cases, a warning. No fine.
Before getting my CHL, I was hoping in some way to get the opportunity to show it to a LEO... but enough already!
BTW. having this license does change your demeanor but, does it change theirs?

No such luck in Jasper Co. The DPS there doesn't cut anyone any slack. They not unfriendly, but they stop you, they are going to give you a ticket.Thats great, because I got pulled over in Jasper Co. towing a boat. Re: Got pulled over by Keller'a finest
I've only been pulled over once since getting my CHL and I was let off with a warning. I'm not sure whether it was because I was on my Crusier, I had a CHL, or because it was December, but the Euless officer lectured me on not wearing a helmet and to slow it down and let me go. I was going 70 in a 35... yes, extremely stupid. It was 6 in the morning, dark, and it was just a 200 yard sprint from the stop sign to my employer's parking lot and there was no one else on the road. I ride pretty much everywhere I go and have since slowed down. I don't want to end up a smear on the pavement. I chalked it up to newbie-enthusiasm... I liked hearing the pipes roar. I do concede that I deserved a ticket for that lapse in judgment, but I was grateful to the officer for letting me off with a warning. I definitely took it to heart.
