Address on my CHL
I have changed apartments in austin. My CHL currently has the address of the one I used to live in. However, my permanent address on my DL is different than the address I am living at now. (i am in college and move almost every year)
Should I change my CHL address to the new apt where I LIVE currently or to HOME address in Houston to match my DL
Just wondering if yall have encountered this situation. I feel that I should have the same address as on my DL. However, should I just switch my DL to my new address where I will be living this year, allowing with my CHL
Sorry if that sounded complicated.
I contacted DPS and they said that I am still able to carry as long as my license is valid. I just need to change the address and when the new one comes, I will have to send back the old one.

Re: Address on my CHL
I am also in college right now and on my CHL and drivers license I just have my permanent address where my parents live and I grew up. So if I were you, I would put my permanent address that is on your DL on your CHL that way you don't have to keep ordering a new one when you move. I don't know the laws but this is just MHO.

If you're a college student, then your home address is your permanent address. I don't think anyone expects you to change your drivers license address every six months.

and with joe817 who said with USA1 when he said to aggie10. Furthermore... so strongly that this is what I told my son to do. I really do hope I am not misguided in my fatherly advice to my son.joe817 wrote:with USA1 who said to aggie10. Well, we have 30 days to get the change of address done, but I don't know what the penalty is if we don't. Ladies, be careful of this when you get married.
411.181. NOTICE OF CHANGE OF ADDRESS OR NAME. (a) If a
person who is a current license holder moves from the address stated
on the license or if the name of the person is changed by marriage or
otherwise, the person shall, not later than the 30th day after the
date of the address or name change, notify the department and
provide the department with the number of the person's license and
the person's:
(1) former and new addresses; or
(2) former and new names.
(b) If the name of the license holder is changed by marriage
or otherwise, the person shall apply for a duplicate license.
(c) If a license holder moves from the address stated on the
license, the person shall apply for a duplicate license.
(d) The department shall charge a license holder a fee of
$25 for a duplicate license.
(e) The department shall make the forms available on
request.
(f) On request of a local law enforcement agency, the
department shall notify the agency of changes made under Subsection
(a) by license holders who reside in the county in which the agency
is located.
(g) If a license is lost, stolen, or destroyed, the license
holder shall apply for a duplicate license not later than the 30th
day after the date of the loss, theft, or destruction of the
license.
(h) If a license holder is required under this section to
apply for a duplicate license and the license expires not later than
the 60th day after the date of the loss, theft, or destruction of
the license, the applicant may renew the license with the modified
information included on the new license. The applicant must pay
only the nonrefundable renewal fee.
(i) A license holder whose application fee for a duplicate
license under this section is dishonored or reversed may reapply
for a duplicate license at any time, provided the application fee
and a dishonored payment charge of $25 is paid by cashier's check or
money order made payable to the "Texas Department of Public
Safety."

Re: Address on my CHL
Then you're in violation of the law. You must change the address on your CHL no later than 30 days from the date you moved into your new residence.Russell wrote:As told to me by DPS, the address on your DL and CHL *must* match, no exceptions.
Make them match. Doesn't matter where you actually live, they just need to be the same address. The address on my DL and CHL is an address I lived at 2 moves ago. I see no reason to change them until my DL expires, which is the year 2015.
I'd say the only exception to this is if you're a student, since your parents' home is your permanent residence and any place you live to attend school is considered a temporary residence.

Re: Address on my CHL
It may also be worth noting that you can have your CHL - and your driver's license, for that matter - mailed to a different address than what's on the CHL/DL.
That's the case with me, because I live in one (very small) town, but the mail is delivered by a post office in another. The mailing address is therefore in a town where I don't live.
Your DL/CHL are required to reflect the physical address where you are located (with the aforementioned exception for college students), which may be different from where you receive mail.

This was how I saw it also. I sure hope this is right.Kythas wrote:Then you're in violation of the law. Re: Address on my CHL
At least years ago, in the mid/late 90's I received a ticket for my DL address having my parent's home instead of my apartment in college. Sounds nuts, but I definitely got a ticket for it. I even asked if it was reasonable to expect I change it, and was told, if you move I was required to update. Now if you went to court, it might play out differently, but not so in as far as the CHL not matching the DL.
Luckily, it was before I had my CHL, so since then, I've definitely kept them in sync and you should always have your DL & CHL in sync.
