Pulled over the first day I got my CHL

Most CHL/LEO contacts are positive, how about yours? Bloopers are fun, but no names please, if it will cause a LEO problems!

Pulled over the first day I got my CHL

#1

Post by Kinetikz »

Cliffs at bottom.

After a long agonizing day at work (I work with kids and got sick mid day, a/c broke in the car and a 120 mile commute) I came home to see my CHL sitting on my desk. It sure did make my day a lot better even though I was feeling like bad. I rested for a bit and decided to head to class because I hate missing out and having to catch up on work. My professor let us out a bit early because it was labor day weekend, so I pretty much ran out to my car, buckled up and took off. I was exiting the parking lot and took a right turn while rolling the stop sign. As soon as I turned, I saw a police SUV hiding behind a tree waiting for someone make a mistake like I did. Before I even passed him up he was already rolling out to pull me over. He hits the lights so I pulled over knowing full well what I did and was ready to accept the consequences. He asks for my driver license and insurance. I gave it to him and he left. The officer came back a couple minutes later and told me he was giving me a warning and to be more careful next time. He also told me the fine for failing to stop at a stop sign is $250.00. I thanked him for giving me such a big break and that Ill be more careful next time. He didn't even asked if I was carrying. I was just glad it was a positive experience and not getting a ticket was a bonus.

Cliffs:
Got CHL
went to class
got pulled over after class for running a stop sign
Officer was professional and courteous, just gave me a warning.

You stated that you gave him your license and insurance.
Did you give him your CHL as well?
Or did he find out you were CHL when he ran your DL?

Congratulations on the plastic and the stop.

Does this count as a record or does the other guy that was stopped who's CHL was actice but hadn't received the plastic yet?
I am not and have never been a LEO. My avatar is in honor of my friend, Dallas Police Sargent Michael Smith, who was murdered along with four other officers in Dallas on 7.7.2016.

I think the guy stopped when his plastic was in the mail still has the record. Especially when the cop tried to suspend the CHL.

My CHL instructor was adament that very few, if any CHL holders ever get tickets for traffic violations. That is the ONE thing he said that I really had an issue with.....like it was some kind of get out of jail free card. I didn't bother to discuss it with him because he appeared to adament about it. Having a CHL makes no one above the law. Anyone. Period. I think most all of us understand that quite thoroughly. I almost hope some LEO somewhere pulls him over and gives him a ticket for some minor infraction just so he'll get the point. I say "almost" because I find it hard to wish ill on anyone. It could be me in those shoes someday...

You are correct. A CHL is certainly not a "get off without a ticket" card, as many of the fine people here can testify.

Giving your instructor the benefit of the doubt, maybe he meant that fewer CHL holders get pulled over, since they tend to be generally law-abiding types and, also, more aware of their surroundings.

i just rely on my winning personality to get out of tickets . "rlol" :evil2:

but seriously , your attitude will get you out of a ticket more often than a CHL
*knocking on wood*...the last 3 times i got popped for speeding ,
i was lucky enough to drive away with a friendly warning .

Tomball doesn't have that many cops , so i'm running out of ones that don't know me .

EDITED to add ...that was before i had a CHL

If I speed or have any kind of moving violation I soure wouldn't expect my chl to help me one bit. My chl only gives me a tool to help protect my family and least of all myself.

Crossfire,
His statements were quite specific. I think in his eyes having a CHL is like having the keys to the Universe. I was pleased with most every aspect of his class except the statements regarding traffic tickets. While I agree that most CHL'rs are probably more responsible (and more observant) than your average bear, there is no immunity to making a mistake. I don't think anyone in the class took him seriously on that point, but anytime anyone puts out suspicious information, the entire context of the presentation can be taken as suspicious, and there should be no amiguity in the class. We were quite fortunate in that there was not anyone in there beating him up with the "what if" type questions. With this guy, there are no shades of gray, just absolutes.

This is interesting. Someone on another forum got into trouble for not handing his CHL when pulled over when he didnt even have it yet!

So, i wonder what would have happened if you hadnt checked your mail, or gotten pulled over before you got home?

I *think* as of September 1st you're not required to show your CHL to an officer if pulled over (please correct me if Im wrong). I've actually thought about it for the last couple weeks, I would tell the officer that Im expecting my CHL but it hasn't arrived yet while handing him my DL. I would guess that most officers would be OK with that, especially since I wasn't carrying.
