ACHTUNG!
“It's hard to imagine anything more ridiculous than attacking the Fuhrer for talking to students about the importance of getting a good education and being a good citizen,” said Katrina Milhausen, president of the Third Reich Freedom Network, which monitors public education...

Re: ACHTUNG!
It depends on the content of the speech, which, unfortunately, we won't know until he gives it.
If it's just a general 'hey, Take your education seriously, yadda yadda' sort of thing, That would be fine, other than the fact that it will take away class time from actual teaching.
Personally, I think that unfortunately, a lot of parents out there don't put forth any effort to their child's education (among other things), and for those kids, this might be a positive message. Will it actually accomplish anything? probably not.
Unfortunately, I would put money on it not just being the above.
Now if it turns Political, pushes any agenda, or ANYTHING outside outlining the facts that support children and parents taking education seriously and putting work into it, then yes, it's not a good idea at all.
If the words 'nationalized', 'healthcare', or 'government support' come up there at all....
More than likely, it'll be a push for some or many of his agendas, with a 'save the children' overtone being used to feed it to the masses by the gallon...
Due to the fact that it has a very SLIM chance of only being the first, and a very LARGE chance of being the second, I agree that this should not be shown in public schools.

It looks like they got enough heat on this to change their course.

Re: ACHTUNG!
When I read the article I noticed that it made mention of activities and curriculum accompanying the speech. That implies to me that it will be a canned-speech. If so, provide the content ahead of time in writing and let the parents decide if it is non-partisan or not. If it fulfills that requirement than I see it as a positive experience for the kids. If it smacks of whatever boogey-man, socialist ideas you may object to, keep your kid away.

National Hooky Day - September 8!!!
I don't have kids but if I did, you can be that they'd be sick or playing hooky with me that day.

And another reason to have our kids in private schools. No one should have their kids in "liberal indoctrination centers".PUCKER wrote:National Hooky Day - September 8!!!

Re: ACHTUNG!
I'm hearing a lot of that. For me - I intend to watch His Majesty's address also, and we'll have a talk with the kids that night about what he said, what the implications are, and what he really means. We'll also talk with the school ahead of time to be sure that the environment surrounding the speech is neutral. I do not expect the teachers to be asking their students about what they can do to help the President (unless they're asking what we can do to help him exit his office in 2012 instead of 2016 ).PUCKER wrote:they'd be sick or playing hooky with me that day.
They're saying the speech will be about "work hard and get good grades" - if so, great. But why do I expect there to be something in there about helping ensure fundamental rights, like the fundamental right to healthcare?
(Sarcasm, by the way, there is no fundamental right to healthcare.)
I will add, as a fifth circumstance in the situation of the House of Representatives, restraining them from oppressive measures, that they can make no law which will not have its full operation on themselves and their friends, as well as on the great mass of the society. - J Madison, Federalist #57

Re: ACHTUNG!
Please, let's don't distort the truth more than it already has been. Josef Goebbels used that tactic very successfully during his reign as propaganda minister for Hitler. We don't need those kinds of tactics to defend our ideals.“It's hard to imagine anything more ridiculous than attacking the Fuhrer for talking to students about the importance of getting a good education and being a good citizen,” said Katrina Milhausen, president of the Third Reich Freedom Network, which monitors public education...
I agree with dicion:
And I believe Chip is practicing good parenting skills:Personally, I think that unfortunately, a lot of parents out there don't put forth any effort to their child's education (among other things), and for those kids, this might be a positive message.
One thing I will not do is to totally close off my mind and permit myself to be sucked into a mass hysteria "the sky is falling" mentality. Nor will I permit myself to become party of a lynch mob mind set. I'll make up my own mind, thank you very much.I'm hearing a lot of that. For me - I intend to watch His Majesty's address also, and we'll have a talk with the kids that night about what he said, what the implications are, and what he really means. I've said it before and I will say it again. The current administration is displaying its dire need for a gun safety course, as it continues to shoot itself in the foot. I will also add that it needs desperately to go to the emergency room of the local hospital as it displays advance stages of foot and mouth disease: every time it opens its mouth it sticks its foot in it.

Re: ACHTUNG!
From what I've seen, they intended it to make it a pro-obama propaganda session, but that got too much attention and it's been "corrected". Gee, sorry about the "misunderstanding"...........again.
On one hand, I have taught my kid what right and left are. If we can't let them see the enemy or foe, how will they recognize them when they see them in the future as adults? Alot of the problems today is that most people don't recognize that gov't entitlements aren't supposed to exist according to the mindset used to start this country.
This is an excellent oppornity to teach your kids how to recognize the enemy....even if that means staring straight at them on the classroom screen. This also teaches them to be suspect of any "authority" figures they have, in this case, public schooling. They're smarter than we give them credit for most of the time.
On the other hand, regardless if it's an objective speech or not, I thought the WH wasn't supposed to insert themselves into public schooling agenda anyway? So this is just another example, along with the firing a CEO of a private company, in which I just can't recognize the USA that I grew up in.
I'm undecided....obviously...

Our fearless group in Washington kicked religon out of school, so why don't we keep politics out as well.
Whats next, are we all going to have to wake up in the mourning and tune in the goverment channel and recieve our orders for the day.
This kind of news makes me sick to my stomach! Where has our USA gone?

Re: ACHTUNG!
Much as I can't stand the man and fear that he is the ruination of our country, like others, I don't see a problem with this as long as it is agenda-free and just an exhortation to buckle down and be good students.

Re: ACHTUNG!
That's a good argument, and one that's hard to argue against. But if we look at it as a States issue vs. Fed issue, I see it as the WH sticking it's nose in where it doesn't belong. Doesn't matter if it's left or right, good "life lesson" or not, should the Fed President be heard by local school district audience on local school district time? The Annoyed Man wrote:Much as I can't stand the man and fear that he is the ruination of our country, like others, I don't see a problem with this as long as it is agenda-free and just an exhortation to buckle down and be good students.

Re: ACHTUNG!
I have no objection to the President speaking to children in a totally non-partisan fashion. I remember being impressed in grade school whenever we were allowed to watch a TV in class where some special news event was occurring. I think the President would fall into that category and might have a beneficial effect.
Let me reiterate: It must be in a totally non-partisan fashion.
