Re: Favorite Authors / Books?
Look up author C. J. Box.
If you like the outdoors, family issues and shootin' and killin', you'll really enjoy following the fictional trials, tribulations and triumphs of Wyoming Game Warden Joe Pickett and his family. Do a little research and start the series and read the books in order. Maybe one reason we like 'em so much is because we've been in the settings.
We're waiting on the next one.

I thought this thread was about guns/police/detective books.jimlongley wrote:Melville

But my man Longley opened the door. I'll add:
Shakespeare (goodness, how was he neglected?)
Cervantes
Arthur C. Clark
Dickens
Faulkner
Goethe
Robert Heinlein
Frank Herbert
Ibsen
James Joyce
Kafka
Stephen King
Dean Kuntz
Milton
Proust
Samuel Johnson
Tolstoy
Roger Zelazny
And, of course, the number one book of all time, the Bible.

Re: Favorite Authors / Books?
Another Harry Potter fan. I thought it was great of her to do this series. I especially enjoyed how the story evolved according to age. What I mean is that the first book is written for a lower grade level readability and gradual increases through the series. During my younger years we had J.R.R. Tolkien, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Piers Anthony, Alan Dean Foster, Anne McCaffrey and others in the fantasy and scifi genre, but they were geared more toward adults.I have even enjoyed J.K. Rowling and even A.A. Milne.
Burroughs if anyone doesn't know wrote the original Tarzan, and wrote a SciFi series known as the Barsoom series.
It is all my Dad's fault, he gave me the SciFi bug. BTW, the Dresden Files series I mentioned earlier is a detective series. It is just in the modern world and he has to deal with magical bad guys. You can't help laughing at the opening of one of them with him running from a group of blue monkey demons flinging flaming feces at him. It can be read here:

If you haven't read them, start with the first as there is a lot of back story working up to this one.

A few more I forgot, and John Carter of Mars with his "mighty thews" fed my childhood fantasies of growing to have some of my own, but I just turned out to be me.TxDrifter wrote:J.R.R. Re: Favorite Authors / Books?
Looking at all the responses gives one an excellent list of authors. Here's some of my favorites:
Robert Crais - Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are an excellent pair
Robert B. Parker - Spencer and Hawk - good stuff!
James Lee Burke - one of the best, regardless of his character
Dean Koontz - if you like a lot of wordsmithing.

C.J. Box, Joe Pickett series
Mark Schweizer, if you can appreciate totally off-the-wall, irreverant, liturgical mysteries.
Janet Evanovich, Stephanie Plum-female bounty hunter. (even guys like this one!) Another wacky series.

Re: Favorite Authors / Books?
I could never name my favorite authors/books. I read voraciously and find interest in a wide range of literary subjects.
I do lean towards Sci-fi and History as my first choices.
