One of the reasons I choose GoldDots (or even TAP) over other brands is that I can buy components and handload something similar (but cheaper) for practice. One can also do that with Remington Golden Sabre and Winchester Silvertip, though Silvertips are older technology and harder to find.

AFAIK, the newer Winchester rounds and all of the Federal rounds are *not* available as reloading components.

FMJ (target ammo) for the range, JHP for daily carry, Glaser (fragmenting) ammo for indoors (home protection).
Springfield XD(m) 9mm 3.8 | Springfield XD-45 Compact | Springfield XD-9 Service
Kimber Pro CDP II .45 ACP | Kimber Pro Aegis II 9mm w/Crimson Trace | Walther PPS 9mm
Bushmaster AR-15 w/Magpul pistol grip and foregrip, Bushnell holosight

I carry a gun because I can't carry a cop.

I am carrying Cor-Bon 115grain +P JHP. According to an article I read, this has very good stopping power for its caliber. Here's an excerpt;

"I will now tell you the best 9mm Luger load for self-defense: it is the Cor-Bon 9mm 115 grain +P Jacketed Hollowpoint. This is the most powerful and street-proven manstopper available in this caliber. It is a high velocity (1340 fps) and high pressure round, and more effective than any load restricted to law enforcement use (such as the Federal 9BPLE)."

This info is from; http://www.chuckhawks.com/ammo_by_anonymous.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

One of the rules is to take your carry ammo to the range and shoot enough to prove your carry ammo and handgun are compatible. Then, use whatever FMJ for practice.

I hope this info is correct. I'm sure some of our esteem senior members can let us know for sure. :cool:

I carry what my local LEO's carry.

Glazer or Federal Personal Defense JHP

My attorney recommends the Glazer's or the Federal PD

Folks carrying Glaser prefragmented ammo (lots of tiny shot pellets compressed in a gilding jacket with a plastic plug) should be aware of its propensity to disintegrate when encountering barriers that standard JHP ammo would penetrate.

I had occasion to investigate a shooting where the LEO good guy fired at a bad guy who tried to run him down.

The two Glaser rounds that hit the windshield pockmarked the glass, but didn't penetrate at all.

The round that hit the side door panel as the vehicle passed the officer made about a 1 inch diameter hole in the exterior sheet metal. It didn't penetrate the inside panel of the door.

A second almost simultaneous round hit the side window on the same door. The window shattered and the driver was struck on the right side of the face by dozens of tiny projectiles which made him look like he had the measles, but didn't cause any significant injury and didn't impair his ability to keep driving.

A final round fired at the rear of the fleeing vehicle made about a 1 inch hole in the outer sheet metal skin of the trunk, but didn't penetrate the inner skin.

After seeing that performance first hand, I personally crossed Glaser off the list of ammo I would consider carrying.

The rounds in this incident were the original gilded metal jacket filled with #12 birdshot suspended in liquid teflon with a plastic cap. Design changes have been made over the years to increase the size of the shot to #6 and go to a precompressed shot core instead of the Teflon suspension.

A much larger load of #6 shot from a shotgun is certainly dangerous, but not what I would choose for a critical defense situation due to substandard penetration. I can't find any physics that would support the proposition that a small fraction of that load would work any better.

I'll stick to plain old repeatedly proven in LEO street shootings JHP ammo. I'll leave the fancy "should work according to the lab tests" stuff to the folks who enjoy stacking up risky variables just to see how they might influence the outcome of a critical incident where they've got one chance to get it right.

Also, unless my lawyer was an accredited wound ballistician, I wouldn't seek or follow his advice on defensive ammo any more than I would ask and follow my bricklayer's opinions on trauma surgery.

I cc .230 gr JHP winchester .45 cal.

I have looked at all the ballistics and opinions and to be honest if I dont take someone down with that then it wasnt meant to be.

On penetration. When I was a kid we had a drunk guy in Houston shoot a .44 mag through our house at 3 in the morning. It went through three bedrooms thus 5 plates of sheet rock and 1 plate of of asbestos siding on the back of the house and came to rest in my dads sock drawer. It was an FMJ. I still have the slug. Had anybody in the house been in front of that round they probably would not be here.

I carry 147gr Ranger XST, or Gold Dots in 9mm or 180 Ranger XST, or Ts in my .40.

Glasser safety slugs and any prefragmented ammo is not a good choice for self defense.

I just find it hilarious how they call some Ammunition 'Safety'...

Generally, if you're shooting it at someone, you don't want them to be safe....

I guess it depends on which side of the ammo you're on. ;-)

I carry .45acp 230gr FMJ WWB or Fiocci.

With prices and availability, I'm skimping. However, I know these two will put a hole in the BG and that's what I need. I can't get too fancy or technical now.

when possible , you should carry hollow points as your self defense bullet .
there are many more advantages with hollow points .

Yeah, nomally done when I carried the .380 and DH does in the 9mm. 45s are freakin' expensive! :eek6

I'm not all read up on .45acp JHPs or looked at comparisons yet to see ballistics. That's another reason I haven't been to much in a hurry. Not sure what I'm looking at when do see a box on he shelf.
