The Brownsville Herald
July 13, 2006 — A 33-year-old man attempting a home evasion was shot by a Southmost homeowner and arrested early Wednesday, Brownsville police said.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire near the corner of Manzano and Olmito streets just after 3 a.m. where they found Cosme Sanchez holding a tourniquet over his bleeding left leg.
According to officers, he told them: “Nothing happened. I’ll take care of it myself.
An investigation and witness statements led officers to the conclusion Sanchez and others were connected to several home invasions in the Southmost area. They believe he was attempting another invasion on the 300 block of Olmito Street when homeowner Enrique “Kike Cavazos, 23, threatened the intruders with a pistol.
Cavazos fired warning shots, but Sanchez pulled a gun anyway, prompting Cavazos to shoot Sanchez in the knee.
“It seems like he did everything to avoid shooting them, said police Lt. James Paschall, adding charges would probably not be filed against Cavazos.
The group scattered, but Sanchez was found by police, treated for his shattered kneecap and arrested.
“There have been numerous incidents in that neighborhood, so obviously neighbors are concerned, Paschall said.
Sanchez was taken to Valley Baptist Medical Center for the leg wound.
Police intend to make arrests related to the incident soon.

I think the kneecap was also a warning shot.

I am scared of empty guns and keep mine loaded at all times. The family knows the guns are loaded and treats them with respect. Loaded guns cause few accidents; empty guns kill people every year. -Elmer Keith. 1961

Glad the GG made it out ok., despite the warning shot.
Shattered kneecap should be a long-term reminder as well.
I can see how a warning shot would solidify yourself against prosecution if you're in an area with an anti-gun prosecutor, as long as you fired into the ground. Still don't think I'd fire except at the BG tho.

If I missed the target I'd call it a warning shot too. Hiding my poor marksmanship with compassion. ![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)
