Stockpile Question

I agree with the 1k philosophy, now that Wally World seems to be getting ammo back in on a regular basis my target stash is getting back into that zone. I would like to have 1300 of each caliber, and rotate stock and be able to once again replace on a weekly basis what we fired at the range.

I think the OP has a good starting point at 500 or so rounds plus replacement.

What you should do after that is stockpile a little bit of cash or money set aside for ammo only. Keep your eyes open for a deal on a case or other size bulk order and take advantage of it when you can. I never thought I had that much ammo, but I look at what I have and I realize I still have ammo that I got a great deal on based on today's prices. At the time, I was not sure it was such a great price.

Also, take a chunk of your stockpile and store it somewhere other than where you keep your ammo. Or at least box/can it up so you don't dig into it all the time. I have ammo stuffed in ammo cans that I rarely use simply because I don't dig through my ammo cans much.

My stockpile is:

Minimum of 1,000 FMJ and 500 JHP for each handgun.

My current stash exceeds my minimum and I am continuing to add to it when I see good buys. I keep it in military surplus ammo boxes so I can easily get them out of the house in case of an emergency.

I think it really depends on how many calibers you have to support.

In my case I have 11 different calibers and I have over 1000 rnds for 3 calibers and over 500 for 4 others. Some of the rest I can reload in a hurry if I need to and I keep enough on hand for about 500 rds of reloads. There's only one or 2 calibers that I don't have more than about 100 rounds on hand and they don't get used much at all.

Learn to reload...10k of bullets and primers, an 8 lb jug of powder, and 100 cases for each pistol caliber is a lot easier to store than 10k of laded ammo!

A half ton of lead, a propane burner, a couple of molds, and some patience, and you can dispense with the different calibers of bullets and you just have to store the molds.

No special permitts to load.
As far as warenty, if it is brought up some will say it will. They would have to know it was the reload that caused it.

No permit to reload. If you plan to sell reloads then you need a license to reload for commercial sale.

I like the 1k per caliber rule. If you shoot regularly, this is not an unreasonable amount.

If you're stockpiling for TEOTWAKI scenario and think you need more than 1K rounds, you should probably invest in body armor and a surgical kit before you buy that 2nd K of ammo.

Yep, my buddy in Massachusetts keeps thousands more rounds than that!

My future son in law and I went shooting yesterday. In a two hour time frame, we managed to go through roughly 600 rounds between the two of us. There was no ammo to be had in any of the stores along the path to the range. If it were not for my stash, we would not have been able to accomplish this range trip. The only reason I posted this was to make the point that having a thousand rounds as a minimum of each caliber is definitely not extreme. We could have gone through another 400 rounds of 9mm easily if it were not so hot outside.
