NE: Police chief accidentally shoots officer

The police chief of an Omaha-area agency was demonstrating firearms to other officers when "the gun went off" and another officer was struck.

The officer was not seriously injured, and the district attorney decided that the incident was an accident.

It was an accident when the Chief did it to an officer. What would it had been if the officer had done it to the Chief?

I would hate to be at work with the Chief the next day. Could you imagine the jokes the next day "hey chief lookin like a sharp shooter today!!"

I love the reporter's statement "He went to load the magazine into a 40-caliber service weapon without realizing it was already loaded, and the gun went off." I thought all this time you had to actually pull the trigger to make the gun go off, at least that is what I have taught my grandchildren.

You might be surprised at the number of people I have shouted at for having their finger in the trigger guard when it shouldn't be. I'm talking about very experienced people that most certainly know the rules.

HV is correct. I used to see officers get reprimanded for this infraction during qualification frequently. I even used to see it periodically during PPC matches with guys that were regular shooters.

You will find that many Chief's in major metro areas are 99% administrative. They 'might' have qualified with their weapons once or twice a year at most per the departments requirement, and are probably not active shooters. This means they tend to forget proper firearms handling and other safety factors (not that that is an excuse.)

Well, then they shouldn't be giving firearms demonstrations.

This is just another example of an "Expert" messing up (remember DEA Video).
Fortunately, there were not any children around this time.
