Stockpile Question
I realize that for the most part the whole question of 'how much is too much (if there is such a thing)' is pretty much a personal choice but....
What would be considered a reasonable stockpile of ammunition?
Currently I have 500 rounds of .380 (no hallow points yet, sadly) and about 600 rounds of 9mm + 50 hallow point. About 25 12 gauge shells and 5 slugs.
I was thinking of calling that sufficient of a stockpile and to only buy to replace now. We (the good lady and I) go shooting about once a month and usually blast about 100 rounds through each gun).
Thoughts?

Re: Stockpile Question
Gosh, you're going to get a different answer by everyone who responds.
For me, I don't shoot a lot....about 50 rounds/week. That may change soon though. With the scarcity of ammo that's been prevalent for about the past year, your current supply I'd think is way adequate, based on your usage.
For me, just getting back into shooting as of mid-April, I've just started accumulating enough ammo to last me a couple or 3 months at current usage rates, if I can't find any more between now and then. I have on hand right now 550 rounds of 9mm.
But I think the ammo shortage is easing quite a bit, at least in my area. So now, my min. buy point is when I'm down to 4 boxes of 9mm. I don't have ANY .38 spcl ammo for my Rossi, and I'm not sure I even want to fire it, because it has never been fired....ever(except at the factory for test rounds), it's still NIB, and I purchased it in 1984.
This will be an interesting thread to read, as people chime in.

Re: Stockpile Question
How much is enough? Simple equasion IMO
Base: Just one type of ammo. Eg, 5.56 FMJ.
No of Guns in a certain Caliber X 1000
Guns with different kinds of ammo, eg, HP and FMJ:
No of Guns in a certain Caliber X 500 X Each kind of ammo
So basically, 1000 rounds for each firearm you own, or 500 of each different kind of round for each firearm you own, if you have 2 or more kinds of ammo you shoot in it.
I'd consider that a bare minimum 'stock'. Which I, sadly, am currently under.
Need moar ammo!
Then again... I personally would prefer to be prepared for when Z-Day comes... but thats just me ;)

Re: Stockpile Question
I try to maintain minimum 1000 rounds in each caliber I keep.
I also try real hard not to add a new caliber without a very good reason, like finding a FN 5.7 for $250

Re: Stockpile Question
A six month supply has always been sufficient for my needs. I don't focus on a single number per caliber since I shoot some more than others.
The 6 month supply lets me watch for any deals that may come up without worrying about passing on an opportunity to buy ammo at outrageous prices. If inventory gets too low, I can then pay the tariff for enough to get me back to my comfort level and still not break the budget.

Re: Stockpile Question
I try to keep 1000 rounds for each gun I shoot.
For my favorite guns I keep more. If you shoot regularly... 1000 rounds won't last all that long. Think several thousand for your favorite range guns if you've got the money.

Re: Stockpile Question
i have a brother in law , that for years the hole family would ask "are you expecting a war ?"
one day we noticed that he had his swimming pool filled in .
ha said that he was tired of the up keep.
we all joked that he turned it into an underground bunker .
we still dont know for sure
any way , in light of the current situation with this country ..gov.
we no longer think he is nuts
he owns enough hardware to open a store .
needless to say , when he asks me to go shooting with him , im all bout it.
he has some really cool stuff

Re: Stockpile Question
Total of all rounds was around 45,000 last time I counted. I haven't bought any ammo in a couple months due to price gouging. It's in 223, 7.63x39, 9mm, 40, 45, 380

Re: Stockpile Question
I know of fellers that think my stash is minimal. I'm not sure how I would take a picture of it all. It is all stacked under my wet bar cabinet. I would probably have to drag it out into the light to take pictures. It is real heavy. I had to reinforce the shelving after the weight of the ammo caused it to crash down. You'll just have to take my word for it....or not. Either way is OK by me.
It really wasn't that hard to accumulate. I started buying extra in January of 2008. I normally shoot a couple thousand rounds of each caliber a year anyway. My AR can eat a thousand rounds in a day of fun...LOL. Anytime I saw it on sale i would buy a thousand rounds here and a thousand rounds there. I had a feeling the ammo situation would be bad if Odummer or even Smellary got elected and it was looking bad for the Republicans, even back then. Anyway...it has been nice not getting ripped off by gougers the last 6 or 8 months. I even thought about selling it myself, but it really isn't worth the hassle for me to make a few bucks here and there hawking ammo. I was around the last time this garbage happened. I was ready this time...
