Need CHL test target size

#1

Post by Tom »

I agreed to help a neighbor do some shooting to get ready for her
CHL renewal. I have the course of fire (from the DPS website) but
cannot find the size of the target that is used for the test.
I have some IDPA targets and will use them to simulate the actual
target (Zero areas) unless I get better info.

Thanks,

Tom

Is one place you can find that information, but the targets are available at any range that teaches CHL classes, IDPA targets may be okay if she concentrates on getting all her shots in the 0 down area and then can transfer that skill to the TX-PT target during the qual. The IDPA target is 18 1/8 inches wide by 30 3/4 inches high, so it is smaller than the TX-PT overall and the 0 down zone is only 8 inches in diameter, which is also smaller than the 5 zone on the TX-PT.

I took my wife out to the range with my XD9, partly to try to talk her out of trying to qual with her PPK/S again, and she enjoyed the experience so much that she shot a perfect score on the qual. It appear that I may be in the market for a new XD because I seem to have lost that one to her.

Jim,

Perfect! I can show her this picture too to ease her mind about
any differences. And practicing with the IDPA target is looking better,
as in more challenging.

Thanks,

Tom

You can get them HERE for a pretty reasonable price. Scroll down and look for the Texas DPS targets.

Any target...

Will obviously give you a good gauge to how well the accuracy issue gets resolved...And what needs to be worked on...

But I like the idea of going and shooting the IDPA targets first...Get good on those "smaller" targets...And when the day comes to fire the CHL course of fire, she'll "ace" it...

Good luck!

I agree. Before I took my CHL class I practiced shooting the standard 25 yard pistol targets (10" diameter or so). When it came time to qualify for the CHL I found it very easy to hit the big silhouette. Actually, it's pretty easy anyway. Anyone who can't pass that little test shouldn't be carrying a gun.

You don't need targets. Just go to an indoor range and send the target holder all the way downrange and have her shoot at the blinder clippy things that hold the targets.

Once she demonstrates 95-99% accuracy with hitting the binder clips at 15 yards, I am confident she should be able to pass with flying colors. While you may spend more money on ammo and get a few odd looks from other people at the range, you'll save money on targets, plus she'l be a better shot!

Of course....she probably won't be allowed back at that range since most ranges frown on you shooting their equipment.

The range where I teach will charge you an extra $70 for shooting those.

What are some people thinking? :?
