Came across this while looking at some other things...not sure if it's been posted before but thought I'd give a heads-up to anyone who is a Trophy Club resident. Pretty neat deal.

The class will be held in the Svore Municipal Building board room located at 100 Municipal Drive, Trophy Club, Texas. The cost to attend the class is free to employees and residents of Trophy Club who are 21 years of age and older.

The application fee for the license is $140.00 with reduced fees for active military and veterans, senior citizens 60 and older and others.

It is not necessary to have made an application prior to attending the training as long as the application for the license is received by DPS no later than 6 months after class attendance.

Wow! That's what I call community service! My hats off to the Trophy Club PD for offering this class.

Hmmmm.....I wonder if there is any way we can entice other PD departments around the state to do the same?

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 6,350 people, 2,271 households, and 1,934 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,568.0 people per square mile (605.4/km²). There were 2,483 housing units at an average density of 613.1/sq mi (236.7/km²). Wonder what the crime rate is... I bet it's pretty low in a city with a PD with that kind of cluefulness! :)

The only problem is that we have members here who earn significant portions of their livings teaching these classes. It's nice of the Trophy Club PD to offer this, but I would hate to see those who put so much effort into promoting CHL having their livelihoods yanked out from under them.

A long time ago, DPS told instructors to tell students to get their applications in within 6 months (even though they would accept them up to 1 year after the date of the class) Currently, you have up to 2 years to get the application turned in to DPS. But, if applied online, your payment expires after 1 year.

I was a bit concerned for my daughter in law that did her class a couple of months ago, and one of my running buddies that did his in February. Neither of them seem overly anxious to get their apps sent in, but the six month thing would certainly have gotten their attention. I couldn't have waited more than 3-4 days back when I did mine, and the 41 day turn around for the plastic seemed like an eternity.

True, but what is not mentioned, unless you dig deep in the url, and click on links is no fingerprinting will be done. Plus there is a $10 range fee involved, no food or drink served, and there's no mention of photos taken, which I must assume it's up to the applicant to get his own.

In addition, it doesn't say all materials supplied, so here again, I take that as meaning you have to apply online to get the packet.

BTW I tried calling Commander Fulk(I believe his name is) and he's out until June 23, perhaps on vacation or out of town.

Sooooo....what seems to be a good deal on the surface(for the tiny town of Trophy Club), may not be, all said and done. Seems to be a bare bones class, with no frills or amenities.

But you have to admit, it certainly is precedent setting, albeit not really enticing. I think I'd rather take it from a private entity rather than a government sponsored and sanctioned organization.

Is it acceptable to post about a $100 class but not a free class? What about a $50 class? What's the cutoff?

I certainly didn't originally mean it to sound as a complaint, but as a self-employed small businessman, I am sensitive to the things that can impact other self-employed businessmen.

I own a website design business. If government suddenly started offering my kind of services for free, how could I expect to stay in business? Government would put me out of business. When government became the new "owners" of GM, they threatened Ford, the only remaining healthy American auto manufacturing company. It's just a simple axiom of capitalism that government has no business being in business. The state of Texas set up the CHL system so that private contractors could instruct and test CHL applicants. This is good. By doing so, they created a new industry, jobs, and private income, on which taxes are paid, and which dollars are poured back into the economy. Now a local city is offering those services for free. This is bad. They diminish the local industry, put jobs at risk, reduce private sector income, reduce local taxes collected on that income, and remove those dollars from the local economy. If they charged the same rates as local private contractors, that would be better than nothing, because they would at least be competing, but still not as good has simply not getting involved in it in the first place. Government doesn't provide driver's education/training anymore either. If they aren't going to even do that, then they certainly don't have any business in providing firearms training - military training excepted.

So yeah, I guess this is a complaint. Sorry if it seems crabby.

Not crabby, just Annoyed! But, I guess that's to be expected, right?

Back when the CHL program started, I think there was at least one Sheriff's Dept. in east Texas that did something similar - but not for long, probably for some of the reasons stated. Heck, the TR-100s have a hard cost of $5 each (at least until Sept. 1) and someone has got to be paying for those ...
