Ranges in San Antonio?

Trainer Hale Rd., right on Trainer Hale, and a few miles down, on the left is a sign for Bexar County Shooting Range.

Just a nit, it's Bexar Community Shooting range, on Bexar Bowling Way. Just as you turn off of Trainer Hale look on the left for an orange sign, high, that you can't read.* Shot there just this past weekend for the first time. One price ($10? Don't remember), you get one B-27 silhouette target on a cardboard slab. You can get additional for $1. But you don't need to. If you take your own targets you can just tape them on. The pistol range is 8 heavy metal tables, two shooters per table. Targets are metal stands with holders for the cardboard slab. You can drag the target to whatever distance you want, and move it during a cease fire. It's in the open with little cover so weather can be a problem. You police your brass if you want to keep it. Thousands of pieces of brass laying about. Even found two live .45s, pretty new as they weren't discolored at all. This is going to be my range of choice from now on.

*I say this because it's one of those heavy metal signs with the letters/numbers cut out. It's up high and I had trouble reading it against the overcast.

Bexar Community Range is my range of choice. If you like to shoot often you can buy a membership for $60.00/year and you get to shoot for $4.00 per visit instead of $10.00. I only shoot hanguns there so I don't know the prices on trap of skeet.

Not many are familiar with this place....I absolutely love going here. You don't have too many Yahoo's coming in. Most are very respectful and already know how to handle firearms properly.

Bullet Hole is a good place to go. The range people aren't strict and sometimes your out there by yourself, which is nice since you can do whatever you want. One time a few co-workers and I went to bullet hole and had a "blast" as we were practically the only ones out there. We would line up targets at different distances and run & gun with our pistols,lol, sometimes two handed,lol, we could only move sideways but it was still fun. I don't think any other range would let you do that.

At Bexar Community can you rapid fire, do double taps etc. as long as it is controlled? Same question for Bracken. Bracken is much closer to me and I'm going to be getting my first pistol soon. I'm sure sometime not too long after that I'll start advancing my skills...

Bracken is a no for rapid fire. And I belive that it is a no for double taps.

It is a good place to go if you are only going to have one weapon with you. If you are going to shoot more then that it can cost alot to go there.

I go to Bracken all the time and shoot at their walk-up range. They told me I could draw and fire there all I wanted. I do double-taps all the time, and they've never said a thing to me. They've only got one, so you may have to wait. I'll just usually go shoot clay pigeons 'til the walk-up range opens up. Costs me $14 to do that ($7 for each gun), as I have my own targets and clay thrower. I think they charge $2 extra if you use their silhouette target.

I have not used the walk up range yet. Everytime I am go there is a wait to use it.

Where exactly is this place? I go though Bandera about once a month and would like to check it out. What sort of handgun range do they have?

That's where I go. I used to go early and be the only one there for a while. Lately though it's been pretty busy.

Good place to go to break in the wife as well. Tuesday nights 6-8pm is Ladies' night; they shoot for free if you both have your picture badges; if not, it's only $3 to make her one. $8 for me with my badge, so not bad at all. Rarely crowded on weekday nights.

I've been to the Bullet Hole- Nice but no range master present so can be unsafe when crowded. I called a seize fire to place a target everyone on the line stepped back while I was hanging my target some Jerk picked up his gun and started aiming!!! That was the last time I was there!

No body mentioned Bass Pro Shops indoor range. It is great for pistol I feel safe there, I can pick up my brass. It's nice for a indoor range and seems affordable to me I got the family membership that covers 6 family members! Only negative is you have to call ahead and schedule a 30 minute session. But I get used to that.

My current range is A Place to Shoot. With their target system you don't have to worry about calling a cease fire since the target moves up/down range on a wire. No brass gets spit at me from other shooters since they have dividers between stalls. My only negative, and it is only a problem for reloaders, is that they have a grate that your brass falls down into. If you reload take a tarp or sheet to lay down over the grate.

Bullet Hole is one range I'll not go back to until they change the firing line layout to minimize flying brass and enforce safety on the firing line. I used them off and on for a couple of years and saw too many issues that were not addressed when brought to the attention of their employees.

Bracken has been one of my favorite ranges up till recently. They installed some plywood that dropped the roofline down so far that I can't see the 15 or 25 yard targets now (I'm 6'1" tall). I have not aked, but they seem to be having problems with the surrounding community or something because they are now asking me not to do certain things that I used to be able to such as shooting a 50 yard rifle target while standing.

I really want to try out Bexar Community and Cedar Ridge sometime.
