SAN ANTONIO -- A man in his mid-40s was critically wounded inside his northwest Bexar County home late Tuesday morning.

The victim's 16-year-old was arrested, although sheriff's deputies told KSAT 12 News that it appeared the boy acted in self-defense.

Deputies said that someone from inside the home in the 9300 block of Remuda Path called 911, saying that the boy, who is a Taft High School student, had shot his father.

The man, who deputies said had been charged in the past with domestic violence, was found with at least one gunshot wound his head. He was airlifted to University Hospital in critical condition.

Deputies recovered a .380-caliber handgun in the home they said they believe was used in the shooting.

A 5-year-old boy was also in the home at the time but he was not injured.

Neighbors told KSAT 12 News that they were stunned by the shooting because the family appeared to be happy.

"He's quiet," Ronald Smail, a neighbor, said about the teenager. "Remains to himself, usually."

Smail said that he and the teenager were friends in the past but that their friendship had "drifted apart.""

A San Antonio teenager accused of shooting his father in the head remained in juvenile custody Wednesday.

The 16-year old allegedly shot his father once in the head to protect his mother. Bexar County sheriff's deputies tell us the father was beating and choking his wife, when the teen pulled the trigger.

"We do believe this was a domestic violence situation. Um, we do believe that the son came to the aid of the mom during an altercation with the father," said Lt. Dale Bennett of the Bexar County Sheriff's Department.

The 16-year-old was in front of Judge Carmen Kelsey Wednesday for a detention hearing. The boy's mother, Rosalinda Ponce, told us she's torn between her husband and her son, but says her children come first. She appeared in court next to her son hoping he would be released from detention.

However, fearing he was a threat to himself and others, the judge ordered the teenager back into custody. So far no charges have been filed and investigators say there may not be.

The father, Incarnation Ponce, remained in critical, but stable, condition at University Hospital on Wednesday, with a gunshot wound to the head. His wife claims he's been beating her throughout their 18-year marriage.

"My son was just trying to help me. We were trying to leave. He didn't want to hurt his father. His father needs help. That's all I know," said Rosalinda Ponce.

If the shooting is ruled self-defense, the teen could be released within the next 2 weeks.

That's a sad incident. It's a shame that the boy that pulled the trigger had to grow up that fast and pull the trigger to save his mothers life. Father faces drug charges, huh? That's what drugs do to people. It doesn't ruin one life, it ruins a family and steals the innocence of our children.

Police say it appears to be self defense. Prosecutors say no charges have been filed against the boy, and none are likely.

But he's still in jail, just because the judge thinks he ought to be???

I didn't see where it said he was being held. It also said the judge felt he was a threart to himself and others, given the stress this young man must be going through hopefully he is getting some help where he is.

So, he's definitely being held in detention. If the judge feels he's a threat to himself, then he should be in a secure psychiatric facility for a mental health evaluation. And the last time I checked, we don't lock people in jail on a judge's orders just because she feels someone might be a threat to others.

This is hard to accept. He hasn't been charged, nor is it likely he will be, but, let's just keep him in a cage for 2 weeks.

What a crazy situation. I can't even fathom what must be going through any of their heads right now. I couldn't imagine having to do something like that at his age, nor could I imagine even being in a similar situation. I just hope he really is getting the help he needs. I'll be saying another little prayer tonight, and thanking God for my family.
