People who really need more training

#1

Post by TxFig »

I have seen this come up several times now, and am uncertain what to think about it.

Situation (true story - happened this past weekend):
Older lady (58yo?) shows up with a brand new handgun to go learn to shoot it for the first time. She has a CHL because a friend talked her into taking the class - borrowed someone else's gun for the test.

Lady OBVIOUSLY has no experience whatsoever with a gun. Brings it to the shooting range (not a real one, a family member's place in the country where they shoot) in the case fully loaded & with trigger lock on. Fiddles with it trying to get lock off (pointing it at people in the process).

Starts shooting from WAY too far away (50'). Can't hit a 4x4 sheet of plywood. Is laughing, having fun (more waving gun around at people). Get's firm reprimand from landowner / brother-in-law. Doesn't listen because "she's 58 and doesn't need him telling her what to do".

During a break in the shooting, someone heads down range to cover the targets. Lady unannounced begins firing at "an old can". Scares the bejebbers out of everyone.

Gets back to house and tells story about "how she had to pull her gun twice already" (she has only had the CHL and gun for 2 weeks). First time, there were 2 raccoons fighting in the neighbor's yard (she lives in Austin, in a 'city neighborhood'). Was upset she couldn't get a shot off at the racoons (never mind they were in someone else's yard!). Other time she put trash out on street and brandished weapon when someone was digging through the garbage can.

Ok, so I am as fervant a supporter of the 2nd Amendment as anyone. I fully believe that our founding fathers INTENDED for everyone to own the most up to date, technological weaponry that they could afford.

But dang it - this person with a gun, much less a CHL, makes me nervous. This is the kind of person that will do something that will give the anti-gun folks the ammo they need to keep them out of everyone's hands.

Is there something we can do?
SHOULD there be something we do?

and no - I do not have an answer for the questions. I am seriously just posting in the hopes that someone on here has more wisdom about this situation than I do.

Get her address and post a 30.06 sign in the front-yard.

Judging by past behavior, I think she would treat it like a target.

I like cute, one-liner responses as much as the next guy.

But anyone have a SERIOUS response to this? :bigear:

Well I guess I know my answer now! I was wondering if anyone has ever flunked their CHL :nono: You would think if she is unsafe now she must of been during her qualification!

When I was qualifying for my CHL the person next to me was making me very nervous with her safety measures or lack of safety!! She missed the center of the target at 5 yards and was pointing her gun every direction but down range. I got to thinking does everone pass the CHL class :headscratch

Here we have 10 hours of class time and no teaching on gun safety. Not everone knows how to handle a weapon especially if they have never handled one. I realize that it is not CHL's job to teach safety but come on now; if you can't hit a target or handle a your gun properly. Don't you think it is the CHL instructors job to not issue them a passing score? It will only be a matter of time before some inocent person gets shot. :mad5

As a fervant supporter of the 2nd Amendment, I presume that you believe that this woman has as much right to bear arms as you. Situations like this can really test your beliefs. You may feel that there are some people who shouldn't have a gun or a CHL. If you truly believe it the right to bear arms that you must accept the fact that this will happen.

"What should we do?" Stay away from these people when they are armed.

The CHL instructor will not sign their form if they don't get a passing score.
P.S. Everyone can use more training.

I would hope so but I believe that she should of not passed since she missed most of the center of the target and was very unsafe with her weapon. But hey I don't think I will ever run into her anyhow :hurry: Has a CHL instructor on here not pass a student?????

Well - seems the question is, Do you need to DO anything... right? My only question would be How are you related to the lady?

2 sets of rules - If it one of your IN LAWS, then bring it up to her children VERY carefully and then drop it or you will have more problems than you can shot closer to home. I KNOW this one well.

If they are not related to you, and you are just a friend that happened to be out there one day, then talk to your friend or the land-owner about your concerns...or don't go back there.

If you are her neighbor...I'd be calling the police a lot if I saw a woman that resembles my neighbor brandishing a gun in the street.

Hope that helps. That is how I'd call it from the sidelines.

Had a friend (woman) over the other day with her boyfriend, she is(god forbid)/was thinking about getting her CHL and asked to see my gun. I said fine took it out of the safe and unloaded it. as I was checking and re-checking the chamber to make sure it was empty she says "Why'd you unload it?" Now there are 4 people in the room my wife, her, her boyfriend, and me, so I responded "Because I don't feel like having anyone shot today." so yeah she looks at it and I take it back as quickly as I can and put it back in my safe.

God forbid if she actually does try for a CHL
